Honestly collegebound, I think your mind is already set on UNC and you just wanted everyone to affirm your decision. No one here is trying to force you to go to Michigan, we’re just trying to tell you to actually find all the facts before making a decision. If you already decided that you prefer UNC over Michigan simply because you like UNC more, that’s fine. You could have just said that. You don’t need to make a bunch of absurd assertions about how great UNC is and how bad Michigan is to try and justify yourself, that’s unnecessary, its your life.

not to mention that some of your posts seem designed to provoke an emotional reaction. you post “i haven’t got into any of these schools yet, but help me choose. btw unc is harder to get into than harvard.” why don’t you just apply to harvard then, you should be a shoo-in there?

Oh my god, where to begin. Replace “UNC” with “Michigan” and this post makes a lot more sense. UNC is a great school with plenty of world class individual programs, but engineering is not one of them. This is mostly because UNC is not even allowed to have a school of engineering by the university system (it was eliminated during the great depression to get rid of duplicate programs in the UNC system). I know that you can major in a few fields of engineering through the engineering and applied science track… but that is very limited. UNC prides itself more for liberal arts, sciences and health/medicine than anything else.

Secondly, UNC has plenty of great students but, as a public school, it also accepts a lot students from rural areas where quality of education is lower. Also, no school is harder to get into than Harvard. Case closed.

I’m usually not a UNC critic like keepittoyourself, but it’s just a fact… UNC is NOT an engineering school. You really need to get in touch with a little thing known as reality.

^ “Also, no school is harder to get into than Harvard.”

Except maybe Caltech?

You keep on praising UNC as a world-class institution but you refuse to acknowledge that UNC has a great engineering school? I find that hypocritical. I heard that UNC has great chemical engineering and nuclear engineering programs, that’s why I am choosing UNC over Michigan. UNC’s usnews rankings is only 1 below Michigan but most people on CC say that Michigan’s ranking is inflated and that UNC is highly underrated. Based on rankings history UNC will be 10-11 soon and Michigan will fall to around 40-50.

Caltech is probably up there with Harvard…

UNC does NOT have an engineering school. You can major in math/physics/biomedical engineering but that’s about it… You’d be better off applying to NCSU. Lordy…

I wouldn’t worry about it, given your demonstrated reading comprehension you’ll be lucky to get admitted to a dog training school. But just in case, are you familiar that ‘school’ has a specialised meaning in this discussion?

If you are a ■■■■■ though, bravo.

Pal I don’t think you should worry too much about these schools – chances are you won’t get in to either. Maybe lower your sights a bit.

I can say Harvard is a world class institution but also say its undergrad business is horrible. Even the best schools can have a crappy program or two. Also, you put way too much weight into USNWR rankings. The reasons that you have given for UNC’s superiority to Michigan do not hold up to reality.

keepittoyourself, I was speaking generally… it’s tough to consider what school is absolutely the hardest to get into overall. In fact, Cooper Union might be the most difficult school to get into in the US (if I had to pick one). Also CollegeBound, the people above have given the correct responses… I’m done with you. Good luck graduating from High School.

Lastly, when I said “case closed” I meant that Harvard is certainly harder to get into than UNC OOS.

The one onyxy referred to is UNC-Charlotte, which (surprise to me too) does have an engineering school.

I realize these posts are a little old but am wondering what happened? Where did Collegebound156 end up? My D was accepted to honors program at Michigan and also accepted to UVA and UNC. She is leaning Michigan or UNC. We are from MD so tuition is OOS for all. She is still waiting to hear regular decision schools, but any opinion on the aforementioned schools? She is leaning toward some type of medical research OR journalism (I am hoping research so she has a job!). Thanks for any input.

If you’re concerned about finding a job after you graduate, I recommend UNC due to its close proximity to the research triangle. I’d say both universities offer great job placement opportunies but the edge goes to UNC.
Also, as far as social life, UNC was ranked by Playboy as the top college for students with the best sex lives- so, I guess that means UNC students have pretty good social lives! Not to mention the weather is so much nicer than Ann Arbor.
