UNC vs. Tufts

Hi, I'm deciding between UNC and Tufts. I'm OOS and will have to pay full tuition for both schools. UNC is cheaper than tufts by around $17,000. I plan on majoring in global studies or political science. I'm also interested in sociology and languages. What kind of opportunities are available for these types of majors. Also, what are the people like and how is the social scene? Thanks :)

Tufts and UNC were my top choices as well, but I gave up on Tufts a while back because of the money (although I did get in). For International Relations, Tufts is definitely a better school. UNC is good as well but students from all over the world go to Tufts to study IR because of it’s amazing program. From my visits and research, their language programs are also very strong as well. Overall it’s a great school.

However, it depends on fit and money. Tufts is obviously much smaller than UNC and if you want a small LAC experience you won’t get that at UNC. I can’t speak from experience, but when I visited Tufts, everybody was really friendly and it was a nice atmosphere. They seemed kind of lax on alcohol, and it looked like there were a good amount of things happening on campus. And you always have Boston a 30 minute subway ride away. It’s also really cold. I’m from NC, so that was also a big factor for me.

At UNC, you’ll get a bigger state school community, but the atmosphere on campus is almost energizing. The campus is beautiful (although Tufts is breathtaking). As a southern school, everybody is really friendly and there are always a million things happening on campus. You should have no trouble finding a party or a performance or a guest lecturer or anything like that. And the weather is much nicer.

I can’t speak as much for opportunities. I know that for study abroad, Tufts has somewhere around 5-7 main programs with international colleges, but I was told that if you can find another program that’s accredited, it’s really easy to work it out. At UNC, they have about 250 programs through UNC, and I’m pretty sure you can also find outside programs. So neither has a major advantage. You might have more career opportunities, especially with major companies, at Tufts because it is more known for IR. However, UNC is very well regarded nationally as well.

And then money is one of the biggest issues. Honestly, I would say go to Tufts if you can afford it. Not if you can find ways to stretch money and have to take out a lot of loans, but if you can actually afford it. If not, choose UNC. You’ll still get a good education and a fantastic college experience. I almost wish that I could’ve gone to Tufts. However, I have more things keeping me here than the weather and money, and I am more excited than I ever imagined I could be to go to UNC. Wherever you choose, I’m sure you’ll love it. Good luck and maybe I’ll meet you next year. :)

thanks! at this point i’m leaning toward tufts but UNC is still really great.
