My cousin is facing a dilemma at the moment. He likes all three universities but cannot decide which one is best for him. His main decision for choosing a universitiy is reputation.

At my school, UNC is considered more selective than both UCL and Warwick. However, in THES World Rankings, UCL was ranked #9.

Out of these school, which one is considered prestigious?

All three are excellent. Warwick has one of the world’s top 20 Economics departments. UCL is an excellent university in the heart of London. UNC is a prototypical US public university. I would personally chose either UCL or UNC, but you really cannot go wrong either way. Has your cousin visited the three schools? Does he have a preference? I would recommend he go for “fit” since academically and reputationally, all three are considered heavy hitters.

What would be the best college if my cousin wants to work for a consulting firm? He is planning to study economics. My cousin realises that not many consulting firms recruit graduates from non target schools.

None of those schools are “target” schools for consulting firms, but all three of them have significant number of alums working in their offices. If your cousin wants to work in the US, UNC would probably be a better way to go (I know Bain recruits there). If he would rather work in Europe, UCL and Warwick are probably better. But in all three cases, the odds of landing a job with a major consulting firms straight out of college are not good.

Alex, Warwick is a target schools for many top consulting firms. It is one of the most elite schools in the UK. It has top undergrad management, finnance, economics and international business programs. It’s undegrad business school is right next to Oxford’s in all league tables. It’s maths are one of the best in Europe. In fact, in the UK, there is such as thing as COWI, which stands for Cambridge-Oxford-Warwick-Imperial. It’s weak area is its reputation as it does not have as much international reputation as UCL’s or Imperial’s. But Warwick is just as competitive, at least in the UK.

1plus1isthree, I think you need to ask your cousin where he would eventually want to work after his studies. If he wants to work in the US, then going to UNC makes the most sense. If he likes to work in the UK, then he should study in the UK. Between the Warwick and UCL, id’ go for Warwick if we’re talking about having the better chances of getting into consulting firm. Top consulting firms visit Warwick campus twice or trice a year. They love Warwick grads and I’ve seen this myself.
