Undecided and Lost

I’m an early college high school junior with no future. By the time I’ve started my fall semester in senior year, I would be done with my high school diploma and associate’s degree. Unfortunately, I am completely lost and unsure of my future. I have not decided on a major. I’ve talked to multiple teachers and professors who have shared their stories of switching their majors multiple times until they found the right one. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s possible due to the expensive costs, competitive students, and family circumstances.

I’m interested in a few things, but I haven’t found THE right thing for me. I enjoy learning languages and culture but am interested in policy and law; I’m also pretty good at math and enjoy talking with people from different cultures. I’m open to anything like business or research-- except absolutely NO science (chemistry and biology— meh). Although I want to find my passion, I want a major that will have career options that might support my future and family.

If you’re looking for more context, I’m seventeen and have a 4.00 GPA both in high school and college (4.89 weighted for high school). I have been a student council officer for my high school as recording secretary and am currently running again for my senior year. I am also running for secretary at the community college that I am taking classes at. I’m involved in a few clubs but not too invested apart from those two. I’m also a part of two honor societies. I’m a Mexican-American second-generation college student, with four younger siblings. This fall (2018), I will be taking a class at a university. (I’m a student at a high school, a community college, and soon a University). I have an idea on what university I would like to attend, which are all in the state of Texas.

I know it’s kind of vague, confusing, and repetitive, but I would really appreciate some advice on what to do!

Don’t worry. Sometimes in life, the degree comes first and passion comes later. It sounds like you’re on a good track. If you’re interested in business and you want to support a family, you could consider Information Technology. It’s basically a business oriented computer degree without the math. UTSA’s cyber security degree has a virtually 100% job placement. If you like the multicultural and people part of business, you could do Hotel/Restaurant management or perhaps international marketing.

Yeah, the common idea that you have to find something you’re “passionate” about is untrue. Find something that you like well enough to finish a degree in!

Your interests suggest things like math, statistics, economics, political science, a modern language/cultural studies, public policy, or sociology.
