Undecided Villanova - Penn State - James Madison

Daughter is still trying to make a decision regarding schools. Seems to have narrowed selection down to three schools.

Her top two choices are Villanova and Penn State-University Park both have pretty good business programs for a marketing major. Villanova offers smaller classes and the professors really get to know the students, however it is the most expensive option. PSU's business school has more resources, larger alumni base for internships and better job placement after college, however the average class would be larger. I think she will do well regardless of the campus setting.

James Madison University is primariliy under consideration only because it is a state school, with in-state tuition. The business school has an okay reputation.

Any thoughts for her to consider in making her decision would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you think your D will want to live and work after graduation? I think that’s something to be considered here.

SIZE should definitely be considered. Big difference between Villanova & Penn State. Have you visited both campuses?

Yes, we have visited both campuses and she really likes them both for different reasons. She is having a really tough time deciding, which is why I was hoping to gain insight from other that may help her decide.

Go with Villanova, it has more prestige and VSB is ranked #20. :)

Supportive87mom, I’m hoping that my D will be in a similar position to yours next year…third school in the mix is Bucknell, though she is interested in a liberal arts major. We are not from PA, but there is some sort of genetic tug pulling her in that direction (my dad was Philly born and bred). Good luck – let us know what your D decides.

Nickenzie - We’re not from PA either, and I thought my D wanted to be in a warmer climate, so I was surprised when her top two choices were Penn State and Villanova. I really thought she was headed south to UGA or Univ of Miami. You just never know…

I’m really hoping that our visit to Villnova for accepted students day will aid her in decision making process. If anyone has any additional input for consideration, bring it on.

I will only add that we know MANY kids at Penn State, and every single one of them LOVES it. The sports are huge of course, and although the school is big, the kids seem to find not only their own niche, but their own circle of friends and comfort zone.

That being said, my son will most likely attend Villanova next year and we think it’s an excellent fit for him. Sometimes something just clicks when you are on campus (which is why it’s so important to visit!), and that’s what happened to him - even though we had positive experiences at almost every campus we visited. Good luck!

Made the trip back to Villanova for accepted students day yesterday. It really helped daughter to make a final decision. While the candidates day was really well done, daughter has decided to attend Penn State-University Park in the Fall.

Thanks for the input/comments.

Supportive87Mom, glad to hear the decision for your daughter became clear. Good luck at Penn State!

Supp87Mom – congratulations to you and your DD! It really is a red letter moment when the final decision is made…you have so many reasons to be rightly proud. Let us know about her experiences in Happy Valley…I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this time next year when my own D is narrowing down the mix, both PSU & 'Nova will be in contention.

good luck to all
