was anyone else not expecting to be accepted? i fully expected a deferral with my 1400 3.7 stats, but i got in. is anyone else on the same boat?

i wasn't, but you shouldn't say you're under-qualified! Just because your SAT and GPA are SLIGHTLY under Columbia's average, you must be way over-qualified in the ec and other factors department... making you one very qualified member of the Columbia class of 2009. :)

also, GPAs are hard to compare- with the honors courses etc. By their reckoning you may have been right in the ball park. Be proud!

the average is where it is because some people fall below it...you are fully qualified as a columbia student...the adcom doesnt always find the 4.0 1600 qualified hence their rejections and deferrals...definately feel grateful that you got in with those stats...i got in with a lil higher stats and have legacy but i have the best EC record at my school and i have the awards to show for it so Im sure the legacy was just the icing on the cake...

yeah, thanks

the whole "editor-in-chief of the school newspaper" thing kinda counted big i think, because i pretty much brought this POS paper out of the rubble and turned it into something great

i also tutor a lot and stuff, but im definitely lacking in the sports dept. haha, i'm such a nerd

my SAT2's were pretty good too, so idk

redge124, it's still a mystery what is really "qualified".
My stats weren't so hot either and I was accepted. Now that I look back upon it, I can somewhat say that other factors such as location, quality of essay, & special situation all helped.

"Qualified" does not apply only to stats. The Columbia profile on collegeboard have "Character/personal qualities" as their number 1 criteria in considering admissions...I guess that would be an understandable interpretation.
