Hey, so I know UT-Austin has a great Creative Writing MFA program at the Michener Center. However, I was interested in applying to the school as an undergrad. Does anyone know what the creative writing/english program for undergrads is like?

Also, on a side note, I know UT-Austin is a huge school, but how big does it really feel. Thanks!

It doesn’t really feel that big. I don’t know anything about the English program though!

UT Austin doesn’t have a creative writing program for undergrads. What they recommend is for you to take certain classes depending on if you prefer fiction or poetry.

So if you wanted to write fiction you would take these classes in sequence,
E325P: Creative Writing: Fiction, E 341: Short Story Workshop, E 355K: Advanced Creative Writing, and E 367K: Conference Course in Creative Writing.

For Poetry its,
E325P: Creative Writing: Poetry, E 341L: Poetry Workshop, E 355K: Advanced Creative Writing, and E 367K: Conference Course in Creative Writing.

They also recommend taking either E 371K Twentieth-Century Poetry or E348 Twentieth-Century Fiction.

As for the campus vibe, I haven’t started classes yet, but as with any school it’s as big as you make it. I’m a transfer student and I can tell you from experience that the best way to make friends is to be involved with the campus. Join a club! For English major’s there is the English Council, Hothouse, Spirit of Shakespeare, and Shakespeare at Winedale to name a few.

English major here!

My English classes have always been quite small. I enjoy all of them. Parlin is my home!

I think it’s a great major although I’m double majoring in RTF as well.

Another English undergrad here, and I really enjoy it! I’m still mostly taking basics (since I just finished my freshman year), but the English classes I’ve had thus far have been great. With the exception of E316K (which is a requirement for everyone), the majority of English classes are very small. I was initially hesitant to go to UT because of the huge student population, but having smaller classes for English helps a lot.

Can’t say I’m very familiar with the creative writing courses, though. I took a fiction/poetry writing class first semester, but I don’t believe there’s a specific program for it when you’re an undergrad. I think morbidpix explained it pretty well.

You might want to look at the College of Fine Arts for a concentration in Playwriting if that interests you. I’ve leaned in that direction a couple times. They have a good program.

Yep yep.

thanks for all the input!
I’m not super intimidated by the large size, because all the schools I’m looking at are fairly big. I’ve visited Austin which I loved, but I haven’t visited campus yet. Intend to this fall…

So I understand that there is no creative writing program for the undergrads at ut, but are the classes for writing within the english major somewhat like an emphasis?
My goal is to get my MFA in creative writing, hopefully at the Iowa Writers Workshop, so I want a school with a high enough level of writing program to allow me to do so.

FYI, I’m also applying to UWisconsin, UIowa, Washington University in St Louis, and Emory University. Still considering whether or not to apply to Colorado College.

WA-U! That was my 3rd choice after UT and TX State only because I couldn’t afford OOS. :s

yeah, I’m pretty excited about wash-u. it’s great because it’s far enough from home without being too horribly far. I’m from Kansas City so the four hours is perfect.
