English at UT?

So I just recently committed to UT in Liberal Arts Honors and will be majoring in English, and I just wanted to know a little more about the program that I couldn’t get off of a website. I was waffling between UT and Rice and opted for UT as Rice’s small size and even smaller English department (and humanities as a whole) probably wouldn’t allow me to get the most out of the subject, at least nothing compared to the massive resources that UT has to offer. So how strong overall is the English department at UT, from personal experience or other experience? Specifically, different opportunities in creative writing and rhetoric (which will most likely be my minor). The websites and the various people I’ve spoken to of course will wax poetic, so an unbiased opinion would be great. Also, how hard would it be to double major in English and psychology?

UT has a top 20 English program so it’s definitely very highly regarded, not just by UT grads. They offer a ton of classes in English during the regular semester and the summer so you should have no problem double majoring in English and Psychology and even graduating in four years if you take summer classes and don’t drop a lot of classes. I’m not sure about creative writing but I know they offered about 15 upper division (senior and junior level) rhetoric and writing courses this semester. English was crazy, like over 70 different upper division courses, so there will definitely be a ton of variety and you should be able to pick multiple classes from different regions, time periods, and authors you’re interested in. You also should have no problems getting a full time schedule organized every semester with so many different classes and class times.

Hi OP, I have read with interest your other threads and from following your thought process I think you you really did make the right decision. Others, I hope, will be able to address your topic. I just want to say that I wish you the best of luck. Following your instinct (not prestige) and not getting derailed by other people’s reactions are really important for a writer. Making a living is nice, too  so I am glad that your choice is an affordable one.

@danfer91 Thanks so much! Variety is definitely something that I want, and just from looking at even the lower division courses I can tell I’ll be able to find it. I just found the course schedule and there really are SO many classes I haven’t even imagined. And I knew UT had a great English program, but top 20 is just the icing on the cake!

@momcinco Thank you! Getting out of that prestige-only mindset I set for myself freshman year was incredibly difficult, but now I could not be more excited about being a Longhorn next fall.

I think you made the right decision, too! You will love UT.
