undergrad major

I'm the parent of a freshman currently majoring in bioengineering with the goal of med school firmly implanted in her brain. My D has recently discovered that if something should prevent the med school from happening, she doesn't really want to be an engineer. She's thinking of switching to neuroscience and psychology, still planning on med school. Should med school not work out, she is planning on grad school and research. Her engineering advisor tells her to stay put, her pre-med advisor doesn't say much at all, and her mother tells her to follow her heart. She will lose a small grant from engineering if she changes majors but I really can't let her decision be about the money. Advice? Is one of these majors better than the other for med school? Help!

There will be a chorus of voices telling to you read other threads that basically say, "Major doesn't matter."

Any major you're happy in is better than any major where you are not. When you're happy, you're more likely to get better grades than when you are not. Better grades improve your chances of getting into medical school.

The mother is right.

Hi kschmidt-

You pretty much have to go with what interest you most. If you think one of those science major is going to impress the admissions committee think again. I just read an article in Insidezout magazine that pretty much says the same thing that everyone else is saying about picking a major you'll enjoy for the next 3-4 years. If you need more convincing, that article also shows the percentages of students accepted into med school and their majors which confirms that you can pretty much major in whatever you want as long as you complete your med shcool prerequisites. Check it out breakdown of majors accepted into med school at www.insidezoutmag.com. Good luck with everything.

get out of engineering....for the sake of her gpa!!

Thanks for the advice, everybody. Update: she did change from bioe to neuroscience.....AND found out afterward that her school will transfer the engineering grant to her new major! BONUS! Isn't it just great when everything works out nicely?
