I was wondering, for those who got in for the nursing program, what do college admissions look for when they apply?
Outside of gpa (mine is pretty high and i have many AP’s and honors classes) and sat score (2200+ should be safe?), what else do they look for?
For example, I wish I had done volunteering sooner, but I only started May for 6 hours a week at a physical therapy place. Like do the admission officers focus a lot on volunteering, leadership, etc, or more on grades? (or is it a 50-50).
Thanks!
Not in nursing, but they said they wanted demonstrated interest in the field (CRNA, shadowing, volunteering).
Thanks! But do they look for specific volunteering in hospital, or does it not matter where you volunteer (ie: physical therapy place, etc)
I think it doesn’t matter, as long as it’s relevant. Volunteering in a hospital probably isn’t great since your experience isn’t related to nursing that much. I’d become a CRNA if I were you, or shadow a nurse somewhere. It’s better to be specific than to shadow in a hospital in general.
But, having said that, just volunteering in the medical field in general is better than nothing.
Thanks! but I don’t think I can be a CRNA in high school and do hospitals let you shadow nurses? Cuz from what I know you can only volunteer and not necessarily shadow a nurse (though I have done a one day job shadow before, but what places let you shadow for longer than that?)
Don’t worry. Any volunteering is good enough.
My DD volunteered in the hospital, handing out water to the patients. She got in just fine (got the highest scholarship). GPA is probably all it matters. Recent years they are expanding so much (with a new building), it’s not too difficult to get in.
What was your daughters GPA if you don’t mind me asking? @JH8888
My daughter got in, and got in early action. Her demonstrated interest came from one summer pre college program in nursing. Nothing else. No hospital or health volunteering. 30 ACT and 3.95 Michigan UWGPA. Some APs but not the most challenging schedule offered at our HS. She did have lots of non health related ECs and a lot of leadership in those.
may I ask what program that is?
I’m kind of worried that I don’t demonstrate interest or w/e because I only recently looked into nursing.
Like so far, I have done one program on cancer research at rosetta institute of biological research(before deciding to pursue the nursing pathway), and this summer I will be attending Boston Leadership Institute Biomedical and Surgical Research (<- it had some practical parts that I thought may introduce me to some nursing techniques).
The program was at Adelphi University . http://precollege.adelphi.edu/programs/programs-for-credit/nursing/
I really do think though @jz1299 that you’ve done plenty to demonstrate interest. I’d definitely look into what nursing really involves and then describe why those things are a good fit for you in your " why this program" essay.
