Undergrad Thinking about Grad School: MechE

Hello,

I am an undergrad mechanical engineering student with a strong GPA. I am currently enrolled in a BS/MS, where I can achieve the MS in 18 months. Additionally, it would be funded. The problem is that the project is not close enough to my interests, and I find myself quite frustrated and discouraged with it, particularly because I have exhausted the interest I had in the topic. Eventually I would like to work as a mechanical engineer designing electromechanical systems in industry, which is not along the line of my Master’s. I suppose I would like to hear from others, when I have an opportunity such as this, should I just stick it out and get the degree, or will the degree not likely help me in my field of interest? Will it pigeonhole me and not help qualify me to do other types of mechanical engineering? Is the frustration and lack of motivation for the topic worth the degree in the end, or would I be better off finding two years of industry experience along the lines of work I am interested in doing? Can you speak of your experiences?

Thank you very much.

Personally, I think you’d be better off either trying to find a different MS project or forgoing the MS entirely until a later date when you can do a different topic. What’s the point of specializing in something that you don’t like?
