Which undergraduate chemistry program has the best teaching?
For undergraduate-oriented colleges that would be strong in teaching and research opportunities you can try “15 Best Value Small Colleges for a Chemistry Degree.” Top picks could include Swarthmore, Hamilton, Bowdoin, Colby, Union, Wooster, Barnard.
Really, a lot of schools would work well. Look for places that are a good fit for YOU.
I would throw in a vote for William and Mary. National university, but smaller feel, in a very nice community. Great academics. Great teaching. New Integrated Science Center (ISC) with up-to-date labs. Wake Forest also has great new facilities. Rochester is also a top choice with academics as strong as anywhere. Case Western is another mid-size national university and has a STEM focus. It’s in a nice area of Cleveland.
Many top state flagships will offer some of the best labs, research in the world.
If small classes and close interaction works well for you, then the LACS listed above can be great. I particularly think of Union as an LAC that is strong in the sciences. If you like a hands-on, project-oriented, career-focused approach, then I would highly recommend Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts. Beautiful campus, nice part of Worcester, we loved the campus vibe, 3 classes at a time, lots of them really group projects, coops, etc.
Good luck!
