Does your college major choice impact your admission chances? For example, if you want to major in an obscure major that nobody really applies for, are your chances increased? Just wondering, my freind wants to major in Asian Studies and would like to know.

If it's in arts and sciences or probably engineering, your choice of major doesn't really matter, but...i was at another top school's info session and they said that when they see someone interested in a unique major such as this they get "excited" about it and probably give your app a closer look for it. I imagine Cornell is similar.

For CAS and engineering, it doesn't matter at all because they know you can change your major very easily, and many, many students do once they get in. However, if you really have unique interests, then you can probably put together an interesting and appealing application.

I'm not so sure about the other colleges.

For the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences your application is reviewed in the context of the major you apply for. But that doesn't mean they'll want one person for each major or something. It means your credentials have to match your major.

fyi, Asian Studies at cornell is not an obscure major. Tell your friend about CAPS too.

What about Latin American Studies?....its what I want to major in
