Undergraduate veterans

I'm going to be transferring schools when I separate from the Air Force in the summer of 2012. I have good SAT scores (2000) and a good GPA (3.8) at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, but a very poor high school GPA (2.2ish). My job in the military is command and control for communication satellites, which I think is a bit more interesting than the usual soldier. Am I a reasonable candidate for transfer into an Ivy League, or similar caliber school (Stanford, Carnegie Mellon)? These schools are big on diversity, I think being a veteran would help a lot.

PuraVida90,

You might want to take your questions to the Veterans sub-forum. You will find a link to it at the top of this forum in the section titled “Specialty College Admissions Topics”. There isn’t as much traffic there as here, but it the people who post are familiar with the situations like yours.

Each college/university posts information for transfer applicants on its website. Many won’t look at your HS grades or your SAT score if you will have completed the equivalent of two years of college before you enroll. If you can’t find this on the websites, it is OK to pick up the phone and call the transfer admissions office.

Wishing you all the best.

Have you looked up the Yellow Ribbon program? I know Pomona College participates and has an informational page about it:
[2009-2010 Pomona College Yellow Ribbon Program Commitment - Pomona College](http://www.pomona.edu/administration/financial-aid/veterans/yellow-ribbon-program.aspx)

If this link works right, here is an article about a student currently at Pomona:
[Transfer Student, Veteran, Brings Military Experience to Pomona | The Student Life](<a href=“Anti Film-Bro: Can Greta Gerwig save Barbie? - The Student Life”>Anti Film-Bro: Can Greta Gerwig save Barbie? - The Student Life)

Can you find out which colleges participate in the program?

Yes, the Yellow Ribbon program is what gives me hope of attending one of the elite universities. The post 9/11 GI bill is a great improvement over the Montgomery, but does not totally satisfy the financial needs one would require at a private school. Pomona is a great school, but I’m more interested in Engineering.

Thanks for any insight!
