Former Military member looking to Transfer

Hi my name is Kyle, and I will be leaving the US Air force next year. All I have wanted to do since I joined was go to either Purdue, IU, or Ohio State University. I have been attending CC in the city where I'm stationed in North Dakota. I have been earning very good grades in my general classes like Psychology, Algebra, and Biology for example. Nothing Lower than a B ever. I am just very worried about getting accepted because of my poor high school transcripts and low SAT scores. I know if i retook the SAT I would do much better now, but i have read that most schools don't accept retake scores? Since joining the military I am a much more responsible person and take school very seriously. I was wondering what would be my chances of getting in to one of those schools, and if a military background would help my chances. I have served overseas and won various decorations and awards. Just the closer I get to getting out I keep thinking all my hard work wont pay off trying to turn my life around, and my future will be decided on the poor academic performance of my youth.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just finished almost 10 years in the military myself and without knowing the specifics of your situation beyond B+ grades, I’d say you have a good start regardless. Throw in a few extracurriculars and the post 9/11 GI Bill and I’d say you are good for quite a few schools. I’d highly recommend that you look at the websites for the schools and check into the following:

 1. How friendly they are towards veteran transfer applicants. (Some high level schools are outright courting veterans such as Columbia and Amherst.)
 2. Do they have a Yellow Ribbon program? This information is available on the 9/11 GI Bill website.
 3. If veteran friendly, they will usually list a veterans liason or a veterans support group you can get more information from.

Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Edit: Yes, you can re-take the SAT. And the higher the college GPA + amount of credits will be we weighed more heavily then your high school grades. 30+ is an excellent amount.

You also might want to take a look at the threads in the Veterans sub-forum. You will find it inside the Admissions Forum, under the heading “Specialty College Admissions Topics”. Here is a link for you [Veterans - College Confidential](Veterans - College Confidential Forums)

Wishing you much success in civilian life!

I have been in a similar situation. What major/majors are you looking at? Is there a reason you want to go to public schools over private?

Thanks a lot for the information guys. Its very helpful. And I’m a biology major. As far as transferring credits from a CC to a university, dose it matter that my credits would be from a North Dakota school going to an Indiana school?

It should not matter that you are transferring from ND to IN. The universities have access to national databases that record transfer equivalencies for community colleges, colleges, and universities all over the country. As long as where you have been studied has regional accreditation, you should be fine.
