I know that Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics are underrepresented in the elite universities,

but what about Filipinos?

I know that Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics are underrepresented in the elite universities,

but what about Filipinos?

yes 10char

of course. how many filipinos do you see at elite universities? like none. They're probly more underrepresented than Blacks and Hispanics

So? They're Asian, and all Asians are the same.

=O, different responses. Does anyone else know?

Filipinos are considered as Asians, so no.

asian and pacific islander have the same bubble, so no.

This ethnicity thing can be quite irrational, considering that some Asians are actually closer to Caucasians than they are to each other ...

URM varies by school. For example Asians are URM at Vanderbilt but definatly not at Berkeley.

All caucasoids are the same

Last I checked, there aren't many filipinos represented in colleges...

bobmallet, i think he means that all Asians are considered the same under the Asian/Pacific Islander bubble. Colleges never represent their demographics by anything more specific then Hispanic, Black, White, Asian, Native American, Other.

Ah yes, the Filipinos are a dying breed. Lol.

I am actually thinking of applying for mainly HYP, but yes, to know if Filipinos are URMs at other Universities is good too.

In the common application in the Harvard booklet it says:
[ ]Asian American (countries of family's origin________)
[ ]Asian incl. Indian Subcontinent (countries_________)
[ ]Pacific Islander

To tell you the truth, I don't even know which to check off. But considering that the first two have blank spaces, then you can specify if the applicant is Filipino or not.

If it helps at all:

Bump, more opinions are always appreciated.

Filipinos are not URMs except for NIH MD/PhD scholarships. Pacific Islander means like American Samoa, if it included the Philippines, then the Japanese'd be URMs.

just check "other" when it asks you to

"This ethnicity thing can be quite irrational, considering that some Asians are actually closer to Caucasians than they are to each other ..."

Absolutely true.

Filipino's are considered "other"?

if you say you're Filipino then yes i think so.

Well then if Filipino is under "Other", are we or are we not URMs?

I don't believe that Filipinos would be considered as URMs. They'd be under the "Pacific Islander bubble."
