Unexplainable Vassar Vibe

I’ve been amused to see the same story repeated by so many parents and prospective students. It happened to us, and specifically our daughter.

There’s something about Vassar that just feels right. Our daughter visited about ten other colleges. On a cold day last spring, she visited Vassar and knew right away that this was it. I don’t know what it is, but there is definitely a vibe that you can’t explain but it is undeniable when you visit.

Good luck to everyone who was accepted into the class of 2019.

And for those who were not accepted, remember that 99.999% of all of the successful people in this country did NOT attend Vassar. Best of luck wherever your path takes you.

haha wow you know I’ve heard of this. I hope that’s the case for me too!

D visited over a dozen schools and very much liked Vassar at first sight as well. It is her #3 pick but probably the one that “fits” her the best IMHO.

@wherezwallace - My daughter (will also be class of 2019) felt the same way about Vassar, but she felt that way even before visiting. We had official visits to two other colleges, but ultimately she didn’t have the same feeling about them as she did Vassar. I think it’s a combination of a lot of things. Of course the campus is beautiful, but many campuses are beautiful. When you add that beautiful campus though to a liberal student body, a student body that has a reputation for being somewhat laid back even though its members are very smart, and a very welcoming and accepting atmosphere, that appeals greatly to certain people. There aren’t too many colleges that fit the same mold as Vassar. Other colleges that are similar are either more conservative or smaller or bigger or all women or students more aloof or something. Vassar is for sure a special place, but it is MORE special to some people than others, and of course, other colleges are more special to those that attend there than Vassar would be to them. I’m grateful that my daughter had such a connection with Vassar. She didn’t even apply anywhere else (accepted EDI). I enjoyed my own college a lot, but I didn’t have the feeling that it was uniquely the place for me like my daughter has with Vassar.

Here’s hoping our daughters love their first year and beyond at Vassar!

@12345n - Does your comment mean that you have yet to step foot on the Vassar campus? I know you are an international student, so I guess that makes sense. You are in for a treat…man is that place beautiful and impressive.

@stepay Yup  I am so excited! The only reason I applied ED was because I felt drawn towards it when I read about it through reviews and on the site (I took the virtual tour and it was amazing too) Guess the vibe travels over the internet as well

S1 caught the Vassar vibe during a visit when we were listening to the orchestra rehearsal. He turned to us and smiled and we knew that Vassar had jumped to number one on his list. Walking around campus and the beautiful lakes and grounds ‘sealed the deal’ for him. S2 already had absorbed the Vassar vibe during frequent trips to campus to attend S1’s concerts and sporting events so he applied ED1 because he knew Vassar was also his first choice.

DD liked most of the small LAC’s we visited. The two that stood out were Wesleyan and Vassar. Not surprising since they are said to share similar vibes. Wesleyan said nope. Vassar said welcome. DD is overjoyed. Campus is drop dead gorgeous and there’s a feeling of “hallowed halls and history” when regarding the architecture. What’s not to love?

“The Vassar Vibe”. Great term! It is a fun, mellow yet vibrant, accepting community. Felt the same thing decades ago. Happy to hear it still persists.

I’m visiting Vassar really soon. I’m excited to feel this vibe that you all feel!
