I haven't made high honors this quarter (I'm a senior taking 5 APs btw) because of my honors English class. While perhaps my B+ is not entirely due to her grading schemes, I think a large part is. In fact, I feel her class is harder than AP Lang & Comp. Here's why:

-For homework, she only gives 90s, because she believes if she didn't meticulously look it over, some of us might have cheated and hence a 100 wouldn't be fair

-In grading tests/quizzes, it's not about giving the right answer, it's about giving the best answer. So if someone does really well on a particular question, she feels compelled to give that person full credit for that question and everyone else a lower grade. Not to mention the questions themselves are hard

As you can see, she's one of those teachers who believes a C is average in this age of grade inflation, and that A's should only be given to those who go way above and beyond. I feel indignant because in past English classes and in others if an answer is right, it is right. For example, a more sophisticated approach to a math problem won't merit me any more points than a merely "correct" one.

/rant

I'm thinking of suing her (not really, but still the class is annoying). So what does everyone think about this?

My English teacher is just as bad. She’s the no BS kind. She told us that last year only 4 out of about 100 students got above an 84 average. That’s insane. Currently she’s grading our papers and I she says almost all of us failed. And I got a 62 on her first test. Along with most of the class. Everyone says that AP Lit is easier. Lol… cries

So right know I’m trying to get on her good side. Go to her for help, and she’ll probably give you an indirect and unhelpful answer. But that shows that you actually care. That’s what I’m doing… it’s always worked before. facepalm

I’m in AP English Lit and my teacher always tells us what to study and then gives us a test over the opposite. She also loves 5 question short answer pop quizzes especially that one day where she said this word for word: “Tomorrow is picture day so we will be in the library for most of the class and then when we get back it’s a free period and you can do homework from another class so it’s chill.” I walk in class the next day and we get a 5 question short anwer pop quiz over 15 chapters of a book and no one read it and the class average was a 15.

The best advice I can give you is suck up to her.

So, so much.

Always raise your hand in class when you have something reasonably intelligent to say, always volunteer to read stuff, go in and see her to talk about your essay or even a book she seems to particularly like, etc.

Just be a complete suck up.
It just may work…

My teacher and I, frankly, don’t have the same views. If I were the teacher, I would’ve chosen different works to study.
She gave me a C for a picture I made reflecting the book The Life of Pi since the Bengal tiger appeared to be eating Pi Patel not morphing into him :/
