So far I’ve been accepted by UVM, UNH, and UMASS Amherst. I’ve toured UVM and unh and still need to go to UMASS. Both of my siblings went to UNH and seemed to like it there a lot. I’ve also am more familiar with it because of a few field trips and track meets. When I toured there I sort of just went as a formality and didn’t really learn anything I didn’t already know. I want to like it there but I’m not excited about it. When I toured UVM I thought it was beautiful there. The tour was great and I was really excited about it! I met up with a high school friend and she seemed very disappointed by it. She said the dorms were horrible and the people were very strange and there were lots of hippy- druggy people around. She transferred to UNH the next semester. I actually know many people who went to different colleges and transferred to UNH after a semester. Is UVM really that weird? I like UNH and think I will be happy there, so the initial underwhelming feelings could have just stemmed from my familiarity with it. Could anyone shed any light on this? How does UMASS compare? I’m not much of a party animal and am pretty laid back. I also don’t really like how isolated UVM is so up north in the cold. Any info will help!
It’s understandable to not be excited about UNH because you’re already familiar with it and your other siblings go there. It doesn’t hurt if you want to branch out and be an individual on a different campus and not have this identity: “Oh he/she’s X’s and Y’s sibling.”
I wouldn’t classify UVM as weird but its hippy/drug culture might be a little strong for people who aren’t comfortable with it. I’m sure there are other outlets for you to socialize and make friends, but the student life/culture is definitely something to consider. Maybe you should spend an overnight visit there and/or go to an accepted students day to see how you like it.
I don’t know much about UNH or UMass so I can’t comment. Sorry! But unfortunately no matter what, NH, MA and VT will be cold places.
@sandy3 - I am a current student at UMass Amherst student and I love it here. I wasn’t sure what to expect when coming here as I had been told everything from it was a great school to a “party school”. Lucky, it seems to be much more of an academic school than anything else. I certainly have yet to meet someone on campus that doesn’t care about academics. (I’m sure they are out there!) Anyway, I would recommend touring UMass before you make any decision. The campus has improved a lot lately, and they have big plans for the future. (1.2 billion set aside for building/landscaping over the next ten years!) This being said, the campus architecture is probably very different than UVM or UNH, as many building seem to either be very high tech or ugly with couple of old Ivy league style dorms/building mixed in as well. Lastly, UMass has been climbing in the rankings lately and I believe that it is the highest currently of the three schools mentioned. Additionally, you will get a discount for being a New England student but it will still likely be more expensive than your instate school. I hope you take a while to think about which college to pick and how much each costs. Student debt should be avoided.
Good Luck!
