Unhappy students?

I've been reading a lot of posts by students saying to avoid Delaware coz the quality of life there is horrible and students are not treated well... Anyone know if this is true?

ummm EXACTLY where are you reading this? I know lots of people there and they love it. I know a couple who aren't happy but I also know a girl who graduated from my HS last year (she was the the val) who hates Harvard and is leaving (must be the first person in histroy to do that!) The ones who are unhappy at UD aren't unhappy because the school was mean or anything. THey just needed to be in a much smaller enviroment.
SO before you go saying it's a rotten place, show us where people say that.

Just to make it clear, I'm not saying it's a rotten place. I'm just asking whether anyone, who knows somewhere there, or even better, has been there, knows anything about it. I've read such things at <a href="http://www.studentsreview.com%5B/url%5D">www.studentsreview.com</a> (<a href="http://www.studentsreview.com/DE/UD_comments.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.studentsreview.com/DE/UD_comments.html</a>) among other places...

illuminus, you must understand ONE thing about these review sites: the people with the problems are the ones who are motivated to write the reviews. If you're an average, happy student at UD, why would you waste your time writing a review on that site? I know I haven't.

That being said... I read quite a few of those reviews and I'll respond to a few of the comments.

There is a lack of diversity. This is completely true and is one of my main problems with the university. There are many rich white NY/NJ/PA/MD who drive their BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, and Volvos and have little sense of value. However, there are also many normal middle class students who are great and many of these rich white kids are actually really good people. So don't judge them.

-There has been a major crack down on drinking and noise violations. You know the rules, don't break them. I was written up under ridiculous circumstances and I'm a bit bitter but you can bet I won't make the same mistake twice.

-As for the issue of some classes being easy(I read one comment about how you don't have to take essay tests and it's all about taking scan tron tests and just copying), there are classes like this at every college. I'm in engineering and this is not the case. Easy? Hardly! I do however feel like some of our liberal arts courses are easy but I'm coming from engineering courses. I take an upper level history course that I feel is easy and I hear history majors complaining about how hard the course is and it makes me question how difficult their program is. I don't know what else to say about this comment.

-Crime? What crime? Seriously, I don't know where these people who complain about the crime rates are from, but I don't see the crime as an issue AT ALL. If you're a girl, don't walk home alone at 4am drunk. Use common sense.

Okay so those are the big issues that I saw in the reviews but let me close with my overall views of UD. I picked UD because of the scholarships I was offered. Woud I do it again... maybe. I feel like you either LOVE UD or you HATE UD. I feel like the social life is becoming more important that academics and I think UD may be seeing this as well and it is why they are cracking down on parties/drinking/etc. There are lots of great people at UD but I don't see that the majority of the students have the same academic drive that I do and that they are here to party and have fun and just happen to get an education on the side. I was expecting a more academically focused student body. The engineering program is excellent and the students are excellent. If it weren't for the great profs and advisors in this department I would have left UD. I have a great group of friends here and am pretty involved but I can't deny some of the complaints that people make about the school.

... my post seems negative but UD is a good school you just have to decide what kind of environment you want to be in.

Wow! Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your input, and i guess you're right about the ppl who write the reviews...

-There has been a major crack down on drinking and noise violations. You know the rules, don't break them. I was written up under ridiculous circumstances and I'm a bit bitter but you can bet I won't make the same mistake twice.

Can you respond to that comment? Thanks for all the other input!

linkinpark14- I don't understand what you're asking. All the comments I posted are mine. I didn't like copy/paste them or anything... I just read through some of the issues and responded to them. That was my reponse to the complaints that the cops are too tough on students. I was the one written up. Am I missing something?

I like UD a lot. I do. But saying "crime, what crime" the same week that there was a conviction in a murder case where the victim was a UD student is a little much. Newark is more or less a safe place, but UD does have thefts, assaults, vandalism and sometimes violent crime -- probably no more or less than you would expect at a large university that's not out in the middle of nowhere.

lderochi... I see what you're saying but considering the fact that I come from a county with one of the highest murder rates in the country I don't think that UD has a "crime issue" as some threads in this forum have suggested. Is UD crime free? No. But what school is? Do you consider UD to be a dangerous campus?

... I consider my home neighborhood to be more dangerous than the neighborhood UD is in. I guess it's all just a matter perspective.

Oooh okay, sorry about the misunderstanding anovice. So are all parties broken up? How hard is it to drink if you're under 18?

I mean under 21. Sorry.

It's easy to drink but it's also quite common to get caught.

Damn, that's not good. A lot of people say that even parties get broken up, you have to be smart about it. How many parties get broken up a week? If you can answer that.

I have no idea. I don't really stick around UD too much these days and when I am around I certainly don't drink.

Do you consider UD to be a dangerous campus?

[/quote]

No. On that we definitely agree. Like I said, I think UD (and Newark in general) has about as much crime as you would expect. There are certainly many more dangerous places in Delmarva.

I still don't like it that so many parties get broken up. Does anyone know the % of students who study abroad?

40% of students study abroad.

LinkinPark-

I am a freshman and have gone out just about every weekend at udel. I have been to only 3 parties that have been broken up all year. That is a very very small amount compared to the amount of parties held.

There isn't much crime that I know of. Don't mess with townies, don't walk alone. It's a really fun school, you should come.

And yes the classes are hard. You have to work for good grades. You can coast but will get C's and D's no doubt.

Yeah...I've never been to a party that's been broken up. And the ones I hear about that are, usually the cops just make everyone leave. Your best bet is to not be stupid about drinking; most of the RAs won't say a thing unless you put them in danger of getting in trouble by puking in the hallway or something.
As for crime: well, there was a serial rapist this year that got into one of the dorms. And last year there was an attempt to stab a pizza guy behind my dorm. But these things can happen at any campus.
I'm not happy here at all and am desperately trying to transfer, but that's just me; most of my friends absolutely love the school. It's definitely a decent education, and there's a great undergraduate research program if you're interested in that.

A serial rapist that got into the dorms? where did you get this information?/
