I'm not so sure if this has been answered, I have searched, though nothing came up. For the unifieds, I understand that we must have pre-recorded accompaniment. Are there any reccommended ways to record them? Any particular device?

if you have like a electronic voice recorder, of a normal voice recorder should work...im using an electronic one, and then just transfer the files ot my computer and burn them on a cd...anything along those lines should work.

I would recommend recording 16 and 32 bar measures along with the complete song on separate tracks. We had an accompanist record these for us, as we can't do this ourselves. The one I have is very reasonable and fast if anyone wants to pm me. He is in DC, we are in MA, but we sent the sheet music to him, he recorded it and got it back to us in record time via snail mail!

Some schools will provide an accompanist, which may vary according to the location. The audition confirmation sheets, as well as the web sites, will have this info. In NY, for example, CMU and Penn State provide one. My D has a spreadsheet to keep it all straight!

Unfortunately, none of the schools at the Unifieds (in Milbrae "San Francisco") will have live accompaniment. Though I do have an olympus voice recorder, which I'm sure will work fine. I have many people I know who are fine pianists, so I believe I'm set on that aspect.

Cassette tapes are acceptable, right? I'm going to bring my own boom box just in case they have non-compatible players.

For schools that require a CD or tape of your audition songs (WITH you singing), how did you obtain this? I have read about people going to recording studios, but what else can be done?

Somewhere on a unifed post I saw that thye may provide a cd player, not a tape player. You might want to be sure you have a backup tape player in case yours breaks or make a cd backup.

Rocket, I know at one time my S had a voice teacher who had a set up so that he could record (high quality) what he was playing on the piano on a CD he mostly used it for his students to take home for practice, but he also made cd's for auditions and he could "customize" it for each students needs, etc. I rather imagine you could find someone in your area with a similar set up that wouldn't be too expensive.

My band director recorded our choir accompanist playing my songs. He used some sort of equipment that was hooked up to his computer.

I called to double check that my d's audtion appts are in fact lined up, and her files complete, even though I had confirmation, etc, and at one of them, they had my name down for the audition, not hers, so thus couldn't find it, and luckily, they straightened it out!
So, I recommend calling to check, which, thankfully, I learned to do from reading this board.
I am now wondering if that is why, at an audition last week, they called for someone, who didn't show, with a name suspiciously like a combination of her name and mine.

I want to ask if there are any kids on here, or parents of students, who audition for Musical Theatre at the University of Michigan and already have been notified. The notification shuffle is driving our son nuts! I keep telling him, be patient; but that doesn't seem to fly.
Ideas?
He is also auditioning at Unifieds for Northern Illinois, in straight drama, Webster and University of Miami.
thanks

My son just used a tape and is bringing a boombox. It's more important for the singer to hear the accompanist than for the auditors to hear it. They don't care about the music. He has a tape with both songs on it and time to introduce each of them.

I think I replied in the wrong place. Our son's accompanist and coach just did 16 and 32 bar audition pieces as the LONGEST auditions are only 20 minutes at Unifieds.

Anyone going to be at NY Unifed's this weekend? We'll be there before (Thurs) and through the weekend. Anyone else?

does ithaca take walk-ins?

Could someone give me a brief walk through of what happens at the unifieds or if it's already listed, please direct me to it. I'm just wondering things like if there an initial check in point - are the auditions in meeting rooms - how do we check to see if there are walkin spots available, etc

Thanks

abbysmom - I don't know where your D's doing the Unifieds. I can tell you about NYC. It's in a professional building with a desk on the main floor. Auditions take place on two (or three) floors. Manning the desk are usually some graduates of University of Evansville and they have a list of which room all the different auditions take place in. They are also the ones who would have an idea if there are any schools with open audition slots. You don't actually sign in there, but it's a good place to start. When you go wait outside your specific room, you may sign in or you may just wait until your name is called (each school has their own way). It's a very comfortable environment with free coffee, water, and various areas to sit and relax or focus. Some kids went into the stairwell to warm up. Best of luck to all the kids who are going to Unifieds this coming week. I'm excited and nervous for all!!!

For anyone doing the NY Unifieds this coming weekend, I'll be working at the PSU audition! PLEASE introduce yourselves to me! I'll be the only current student at the PSU audition and I'll be signing everyone in, etc....come say hi--and audition!! haha. Hope to see some of you there.

ahhhhhhh psucat you don't accept pms!! i was going to tell you what my name is!
