Unified walk in auditions NYC

Does anyone know if D can attempt walk in auditions at schools who did not accept her based on prescreens? Also, everything I can find about unifieds on the forums here seems specific to Chicago. Can anyone share insights or experiences for walk in auditions at NYC unifieds?

If your kiddo didn’t get an audition based on the pre-screen…I seriously doubt they will allow a “walk in” audition.

NYC unifieds at pearl Studios will have schools with walk in slots. Pearl Studios is actually two buildings across the street from one another. Go early in AM and see if you can get a map of where each school is. Then walk the floors and ask the person doing check in at each school if they have walk in Spots. First come first served so early is better. Also do this day one -some
Schools may be able to assign you a walk in on a different day but better to check on first day.

Bring a check book as some schools will have you apply and pay fee right there.

Hope that helps.

@NewEngMTMom I have heard one anecdotal tale of it being done-but I personally wouldn’t encourage my S/D to do it. The school(s) have a set of steps (hoops to jump through, if you will) for admission into their program. The ones that have prescreens are stipulating that they want to narrow their live auditions down to a number that works for them. Why would a prescreen school even offer walk-ins? I can’t answer that (and I honestly don’t think it happens a lot); but your S/D already had their shot. And they weren’t invited to advance. To me-it seems unethical, frankly-and could be embarrassing if the school connects the dots and figures it out.
I agree with @bfahopeful that if you and your D aren’t feeling well about where things stand-walk ins would be a great way to go. My D received 2 acceptances into BFA MT programs from walk-ins in Chicago last year.
Break Legs!

@owensfolks

Your post is confusing…in the first paragraph, you say you don’t think someone who didn’t get past a prescreen will get a walk on.

In your second paragraph, you encourage someone to do it.

Which is it???

@thumper1 I think she means try some other walk-ins. My daughter was a walk-in 2 years ago at MSM and was later accepted. She didn’t end up there but had a great experience auditioning. I would agree that it is probably too risky to try to re-audition.

@thumper1 -Don’t walk in at schools who disqualified you during prescreens. Do walk in at other schools.

I think if your student has a favorite school and they got turned down at pre-screens and that school happens to have some walk in spots… and your child doesn’t mind a second rejection… go for it. As long as the student isn’t dishonest. It shows a desire and a willingness to keep trying.

It’s a lot of if’s and I imagine the time would be better spent at a school that hasn’t seem them. But the heart wants what the heart wants and I would let my student make the choice.

What is the worst thing that will happen? They will be rejected by the program again.

Is there a list somewhere of the schools that have walk-up auditions at Unifieds in NYC?

@CTMomofAJC you have to go to Pearl Studios and get a map of where all the schools are located in the building(s). Then walk the floors to schools you may be interested in and ask if they take walk ins. It is first come first served and some may take them, but fill up fast. It just depends on the school and if there slots are full or not.

Is it true that some are in the Nola building? Is that walkable from Pearl Studios?

Nola is about a 30 minute walk from the Pearl Studios.

Faster to take the subway if on a time crunch, but yes, walkable if you have the time.

Just FYI - the schools at Nola (Guthrie and Ithaca usually) and generally those at Ripley Greer are not ‘official’ unified schools and don’t usually have walk ins. We found that the walk ins were at Pearl Studios only with the exception of a couple of the overseas programs like Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and LIPA. Not sure where they are located this year (there is a 2nd Ripley Greer which is pretty far north and RC of Scotland was there our year - don’t make the mistake we did and think it is nearby…totally different than the main Ripley Greer right near the Pearl Studios).

My D was able to do walkins at Rutgers, which was at Ripley Greer and also at Wisconsin Stevens-Point, LIU Post, University of Albany, and Rider which were all at Pearl but not official unifieds. She also did one with Shenandoah at Chelsea Studios.

My daughter got walk-ins at Ball State and Viterbo.

@owensfolks been following your story since last year. Glad to see things are going well this year!

Thanks @LBSMOM ! Your D’s school’s star quarterback played HS football with my son

She LOVES Wagner - couldn’t be happier
