I am a mom of a senior class of 2014 who is applying to colleges in CA for theater. The college application process is complicated enough without the audition piece that many universities are requiring. I have just come to hear about Unifieds and can't find any information on when these are coming up and if my daughter has missed the opportunity to participate in them for admission to college Fall of 2014. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just check unifiedauditions.com it should have the dates for Los Angeles and most of the schools participating. A few schools will also come to the area at the same time, however, and are not listed.

Thank you I will head to that site now…I guess the ultimate question is have the unifieds past for Fall 2014 applicants? Most schools application deadlines are coming up for Fall 2014.

Unifieds are in early February of the year you want to enter school. So a student wishing to enter college in fall 2014 will attend the February 2014 Unifieds for auditions. The date may be slightly different for CA than NY. We are on the east coast so that is what I am familiar with.
You will start applications for your schools next month however. Many college applications for fall 2014 open on August 1 2013. The applications usually have to be completed before auditions.
You don’t have to do all your auditions at Unifieds either. Some can be done on campus, or at regional auditions. Each school has a slightly different set up. It will be detailed after you apply. Hope that helps.

THANK YOU…this process is so daunting. I appreciate you all taking the time to help this overwhelmed mom :)

Sure. Yes it is daunting. And a little weird really. It seems like January February of the senior year is very late to be auditioning to get in for that fall. At least that is what I thought when I first heard. When you apply to college for other majors these days, you are finished way before then!
The other strange part is that you don’t hear you are accepted until March or even April, and have to decide by May 1. There are a handful of schools that decide earlier but nearly all are the second half of March.
There’s a lot of information here on cc to help you. Keep reading. You can search the forum or just read through busy threads.

I was confused about the Unifieds last year too. It’s important to understand, it’s not like a conference where you sign up for the conference and then sign up for sessions that are part of the conference. It’s also not a “cattle call” audition where you perform one time for a whole bunch of schools simultaneously. You don’t register for the Unifieds. Rather, you apply to the schools that you’re interested in, and arrange your off-campus auditions, and find that they’re all at the same address during the same week. Each school will have its own requirements and will be running completely separate audition events. They all have their own fees also. Some schools want your application to be complete before you can schedule an audition. Others will let you reserve an audition slot early. Most do a good job of explaining their process and expectations, but some will utterly baffle you.

Many students ALSO do walk-in auditions at Unifieds. My son didn’t, so I don’t know first hand, but I’ve been told that some schools let you sign up in the morning.

My son did walk-ins as well as scheduled, and ended up going to one of the schools he did a walk in. Some schools required he fill out an entire application minus the essays, others had him walk in with the bare minimum information, some required an app fee, some waived, get my point? Each school does it their way! I have also heard that for some, even if you apply early and are not able to get the time you request, you can try to change it in person during Unifieds. Most of the schools are accomodating.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions. This has been very helpful.

You guys are all so helpful! This is a whole new ballgame for us–if only D2 were interested in environmental science like D1! Here’s my current problem–I try to go to the unifiedauditions.com website, and I get a “service unavailable” message. Anybody know where to find the info? I can get unified professional auditions, but not college. Thanks in advance!

I got the same message…

January 25, 26: New York City

February 3, 4, 5: Chicago

February 6: Las Vegas

February 8, 9: Los Angeles

How’d you get that info?

I found it on a unified thread on this site…hope it’s accurate :)

DrJohn is connected to Unifieds and he posted the following:

Unified Audition dates for 2014
The dates are now official:

January 25, 26: New York City

February 3, 4, 5: Chicago

February 6: Las Vegas

February 8, 9: Los Angeles

Please note: because of the Super Bowl on February 2, we were unable to keep our normal schedule as hotel rooms were unavailable. Therefore, we are auditioning in New York the week prior to our normal schedule.

We will continue to use Pearl Studios for our New York audition site. Pearl Studios are located at 500 8th Ave.

In Los Angeles we have moved back to the Westin Los Angeles Airport at 5400 Century Blvd.

Our website, National Unified Auditions, will be updated to the 2014 dates soon.

Thanks in advance to all of you for your support of the National Unified Auditions

Also-- remember that lots of colleges audition in the same cities on the same days as the Unifieds. So you need to check every college website, and make yourself some kind of spreadsheet. It really is one of those things that is anxiety-making beforehand, but turns out to work pretty well, though.

When do colleges start posting the audition dates? Does your application need to be completed before you book the date?

In the case of CMU, DePaul, Syracuse and CCPA, you had to apply first and then use a # from your application to request an audition. (My son also did a walk-in at another school, and completed his application after he returned from unifieds.) I know that some of the schools filled up their slots at Unifieds early (we thought about Ithaca, but it was too late by the time we got to it), so it’s good to get going on aps as soon as possible.

I just checked all of our schools websites 2 days ago. Only one actually has the audition dates for 2013-2014 posted… which is a little odd since most of the apps open on August 1st. (in 2 days) Most schools still had last years dates up. I guess we have to wait a little longer to know possible audition dates!
And sfield, each school is different about booking the audition and the status of the app. The site usually tells you their procedure. I made a spreadsheet, as someone else suggested. Many do want the app to be finished, or in some stage near completion.

Thank you, a spreadsheet sounds like a great idea! I will get to work! :)
