thanks that does help so much.

it would be nice if most schools sent reps to Chicago. I read somewhere in this forum that ny is hosting the Super Bowl the week after the unified dates.

That is why the dates for the NYC Unifieds changed, so as to not conflict with the Superbowl. It is unlikely the two will have any conflicts.

I heard that more schools go to Chicago and it’s a day longer so I’m trying to decide between NYC or Chicago. NYC works better with my work schedule but I wonder about hotel rates even the week before Super Bowl. Decisions…Decisions…

GSOMTMom - Did you check flight prices if you will be flying? And the weather in Chicago is more of a risk. I have stayed in both NYC and Chicago in the winter and hotel rates are generally much better than in the nice weather months. I have gotten rates of $150 a night. Going to Chicago in December was SO much cheaper than going in July… I priced both and was shocked at the difference. And NYC is a ghost town in January compared to the holiday crowds in December.

My biggest concern with NYC is people coming early for Super Bowl and the hotels increasing prices accordingly. We can drive to NY. I didn’t check Chicago airfare prices yet but my daughter’s drama class went this year during unifieds and airfare was less than $250. I’m hoping it’s that low for 2014 unifieds.

Since D goes to a performing arts school about four families are thinking we’ll go as a group and maybe do a vacation rental in NYC bringing down lodging costs or sharing rooms in Chicago. Again, decisions decisions… :)

Okay, so this might be a silly question, but this is all very new to our family. Are the schools listed on the Unifieds site the ONLY schools represented? If our D is interested in different schools than the ones listed, does that mean we’re driving to all of these individually? Or do I understand some of you to say that they might have representatives “in the vicinity” of Unifieds? We’re trying to decide whether it even makes sense to plan on going to Unifieds, since we’re in New England and can drive to many of the schools that she’s really interested in. Oh, help!

Some are in the vicinity. You can usually find out on the individual schools website or by calling and asking.

A number of schools have auditions at the same time as Unifieds, in the same vicinity.

You need to check with the individual schools. Even if they don’t have this year’s dates posted yet, you could check the info from last year…or call the theatre department and ask.

Cadence lots of schools will hold auditions at the same time and in the same city as Unifieds. You’ll find the info on the schools’ webpages. You can drive to many if you’re on the East Coast, and that’s one great way to do it. There are several studios in New York, Pearl where the Unifieds are, and Ripley-Grier about a block away-- between those you will find most of the schools you’re interested in.

Cadence, if you can easily and cost-effectively drive to the other schools on your child’s list as well as Unifieds, you should have your child also think about the audition-style that could be best for them, and factor that into the decision. Unifieds are very different from on-campus auditions. There is a lot going on, a lot of running around, less structure and more independence required at Unifieds, whereas on-campus auditions (depending on the school of course) tend to be smaller groups with more supervision, though some find them to be more tense.
