Union vs. Conn College

We're torn. Anyone have any input on making this decision? Thank you!

They are both lovely schools with beautiful campuses.

Union's traditional strength has been in sciences and engineering, though the humanities/social sciences are strong.

Conn. College's traditional strength has been in social science/humanities although their sciences are solid.

Conn. College has an excellent study abroad program and stresses internationalism.

Conn. College will be more moderate in terms of the whether. The LI Sound is a moderating influence. There is a ferry to LI very near campus and the water is always there.

They are both good schools with similar student bodies, though I would guess Conn C might be slightly preppier.

I was trying to decide between conn coll and union and ended up choosing Union and I am glad that I did.

Like mythmom said the sciences and engineering here are very strong but I have found that so are the humanities and social sciences.

as to the study abroad program, Union has recently (last month i think) expanded the possibilities. You can now find any program you'd like and get funding for a a term, full year, etc to anywhere in the world. It is the first year they have done something like this am they are very excited to offer many more options. There are also a ton of oppotunities to research abroad. If you'd like, PM me and I can send you some of the documents that they recently sent out to students explaining study abroad that you won't find on the website.

I also found that Union has many more undergrad research opportunities. I know so many students who are currently doing research (even in non-science fields) and the faculty is so accessible. Union funds a lot of students to do research over the summer and also has a really cool program where you can get paid anywhere from $3,000-4,000 over the summer to work at a non profit organization anywhere you want. A lot of professors are around during the summer for research, too.

Something I found out after I chose Union that made me glad I did not choose Conn Coll is the prepiness of the student body. You might not expect it but Union is a funky place! There is definitely a presence that seems to be strengthening of proactive students politically, environmentally, etc.

Overall, I think Union provides so many more resources for students anywhere from academic support (Calc Help Center, Writing Center, Physics help, bio help, etc.) to activities on campus to funding. It's so easy to get funding for an event or an idea (through Minervas or other ways) and the administration is always supportive of student projects.

A lot of what I discovered I liked about Union, though, was after I had got here. THere are so many resources I didn't expect and I have found support in anything I try to do.
