Unique Essays

OK. So I wrote this essay that is, in my opinion, witty and unique, but at the same time doesn't have a lot of substance. Two English teachers have read it, and both said the same thing: that it was very unique, funny, and witty, but they don't know if the competitive schools like Harvard would accept me based on uniqueness and wittiness.

So my question is: should I turn in the essay and take a risk? Or should I just go for a more cliche approach? Is it worth it basically?

Thanks in advance!

A good essay has flavour and unique. Writing on a cliche topic (depression, family deaths, etc.) will make you a boring candidate. If you like, send me a copy of the essay via PM.

PM me. Would love to comment

unique is good, but there should also be some substance to your essay. I'd say you should try combining both. You could send the essay over if you'd like.

yea now im intrigued...send it over i'll take a look

pm me, i'll take a look

Pm it to me as well, I think that a memorable essay can be very effective.

pm me. i love editing and critiquing stuff.

It really depends on your essay and how much your "unique, funny, and witty" captures your readers. Personally, I'd say a unique, memorable essay is a lot more effective than a cliche one. It's certainly worth the risk - there might be schools that love it and schools that hate it, but cliche essays never have that capacity.

Send it over - I'd be happy to take a look at your essay.

Wow so many people o.o thanks all! ill send over the essay to a few since i dont want my essay to be spread around too much =P forgive my desire for privacy! haha

would LOVE to read it.

Wanna trade? I think mine's pretty unique to and I'd like to see the topics some of the other CCers write about.

No offense to those who volunteered (thank you all by the way), but I would prefer it not to be '09 graduating people (if you are a senior right now). I am competing with you guys after all >.< I sent it to a couple people already, but for the others, can you guys tell me whether you are '09 or not?

Thanks again!

Hi!

I'm graduating in '10, I'd love to read your essay, PM it if you want!

Good luck anyway

cool. will send as soon as i fix some errors.

anyone else?

I'd love to go through it!

I'd also be happy to read your essay. As a journalism major in school, I knew my essay was going to be the determining factor in whether I got accepted or not. Because of this, I took somewhat of a chance as well and wrote a funny, witty, rhyming poem that touched on many of my skills and attributes. If you make sure that you add even a little substance and information about you -- the wittiness could be what sets you apart from the other boring essays. Good luck!

i would love to read it PM me

I'd love to read it :) I'm going to be applying this year though, if that makes any difference.

I'd be glad :)
