Univ of Rochester vs Univ of Maryland

So I'm stuck between these two...putting location (a very important aspect, not denying that) aside...what do you guys think are the benefits of either or what are your opinions on each of the schools? I guess I'm mostly interested in hearing about classes (especially freshman year) and about the social scene..

Thanks guys,

=DL

Alright, well I go to UMD, and I am from Rochester, both my parents and many other relatives went, so im probably better qualified to answer this question than anyone else lol.

To put it in a nutshell, U of R is more academic than UMD. Classes are smaller from the beginning, and you get more individualized attention. Many students are U of R are in pre professional programs (Pre-Med, Pre-Law), and students spend their time focusing on their school work. Now, this isn’t to say that U of R doesnt have a social life, but its a little different that UMD. In my expirence, (and i’ll be honestly, I havent really hung out on U of R campus that much, so take this with a grain of salt), U of R students are more of the “counter culture” students, so to speak. However, U of R does have some EXCELLENT academic programs.

As for UMD, its a more diverse crowd, obviously because its a much bigger student population. Although UMD does have a large party reputation, there are serious students, although most likely not as many as U of R. Obviously being close to DC helps alot with internships and stuff to do, while Rochester is kind of a boring place. UMD is also cheaper, and, if you are from far away and have to take public transportation home, then UMD has the advantage there.

Anyways, hope that helps. What are you majoring in?

Thanks for the reply jtrain. Lotta helpful info there…If I have further questions I’ll PM you.

I am mostly considering some sort of engineering, possibly doing a premed track (not decided on that yet lol)

Haha, I am in a very similar situation. The only thing is, in my situation, the Rochester bill is just too high to accept. With only 10k in support, the bill amounts to twice that of College Park. Guess where I will probably go?

Ahh I see. U of R gave me a couple scholarships so the price is pretty similar. The only thing it really comes down to now, is what i want to sacrifice for what…a slightly better school for a better location…etc etc.

Darn I have like 2 days <_<

What do you plan to study at UMD Amble? And where are you from?

No matter which you pick, you should be getting a pretty good school.

If I can, I will try to study some sort of engineering (probably biomedical) or maybe some sort of neuroscience-related stuff. And, I’m from Maryland so I get the rather nice in-state tuition.
