Universities in CA, PA, MD, and DC?

I planned applying to BU, USC, HC, and GW, but not anymore because I simply wouldn't be able to pay for tuition.
It sucks but I am not eligible for financial aid and these schools are tough in giving merit scholarships to international students.

I'd like to find more colleges in CA, PA, MD, and DC.
Currently I am considering Saint Mary's C of CA, Loyola Marymount U, Villanova, American U, and Scranton.
Anyone know about these schools?
If so, can you tell me about these schools?
I am planning to major in biochem, pre-dent, or statistics.
I don't care about the size of school, but I prefer 3,000- 10,000.

Plus, any suggestion? I want to find more likelies/safeties.
I am about top5% (uw3.8), SAT 1900ish. (Taking ACT next week). Thanks!

If you are worried about tuition, apply to a state school such as Penn State, University of Maryland, St Marys in Maryland, Towson University in Maryland et. al. All are good schools and are cheaper than most private schools absent scholarships.

While I would agree that Penn State is a great school, it may not be the best choice for the OP given that it's OOS tuition, not including room, board and other miscellaneous expenses is currently over $25K and, especially because the number of undergraduates is well over 30,000 and the OP is looking for school with no more than 10,000. Towson or St. Mary's do sound like good possibilities. Also, if the OP wants to expand his/her area to include New York, many of the SUNY schools have smaller student populations as well as very reasonable OOS tuition/room & board costs.

Cal Poly SL might be a good choice. Then there's a lot of LACs in PA which are fairly generous with financial aid.

^That's true, as well. Two PA LAC's with decent merit aid that come to mind are Franklin & Marshall and Muhlenberg--both sound like great schools. Allegheny (also in PA) seems to be generous with merit aid. Goucher, in Maryland, has generous merit aid, as well as a strong international focus(perhaps more welcoming to an international student...?)

Check out Gettysburg as well.

if you are worring about tuition..do not apply to..gw...

UMD-College Park earns big votes from our family! And, with top scores, you can be competitive for merit scholarships; sorry, I don't know their policy toward int'l students and merit aid...you can find it on their FinAid web site. I know that if you're out of state, you can get the half-tuition Banneker-Key that also pays for books, which also makes it much more affordable than private schools. The honors program (and the fact that you live with other honors students) is also a big plus. It's a 30-min metro ride to DC, and D has easier access to the National Mall/Smithsonian/etc. than her friends at Georgetown, because of the Metro.

Don't let the size intimidate you. I strongly feel that you can make a school as small as you want it to be. On her first day there, D ran into someone she knew! (a past roommate from CTY), and her professors (1st semester freshman) all know her by name. And, she made a ton of friends very quickly. It's worth checking out.

I only know liberal arts colleges in PA.

Best
Swarthmore
Haverford
Grove City
Bryn Mawr (Female)
Lafayette
Bucknell

Good
Dickinson
Muhlenberg
Franklin and Marshall
Gettysburg
Ursinus
Allegheny

Okay
Moravian
Albright
Juniata
Elizabethtown
Lebanon Valley College
Susquehana
Scranton
Messiah
Washington and Jefferson
Lycoming

F&M, Albright, and Elizabethown will guarentee you admission to Penn State's medical school if you have an SAT of 1250 and 3.5 GPA at the school. I think you have to be a PA resident though and I am not sure what programs are offered at Penn State's medical school.

Good Luck

I can tell you that right now you'd probably have an excellent shot for Scranton. If it's merit scholarships you're looking for, they seem to give a lot of them out. (I do live right near the school...so maybe they're a bit biased to northeastern PA.) I think you seem to be right up their alley. Even more so if you could get those SATs up just a little bit.

However, I do think you could shoot a little bit higher than Scranton. Regardless, they are known for a science program that focuses HEAVILY on premed, so if you're looking for that, it's certainly a good choice.

Check out Occidental, UOP, USF, and University of Redlands in CA. All have merit scholarships

penn state or cal poly seems too crowded. I will definetly check SMCMD, Muhlenberg, Gettysburg, Redlands and Scranton. I have big interest in F&M or Villanova b/c it's close to where my Uncle lives. Thanks albpace for nice lists of colleges.
I already applied to UOP; Occidental and USF do not have much scholarships for int'l student (too sad!) Thank you all.

Goucher is smaller, but a good MD school that gives merit $$.

Grove City (PA) is a very good school at a great price... but is deeply religous. You would need to be a practicing Christian to get in and continue to live in that lifestyle throughout college.

Messiah is more liberal, but still a Christian school. And it is very expensive for what it offers... you can expect the highest merit scholarship to bring your costs into the low 20ks.

Just wanted to share the religous info so you know in advance. :)

Which schools in PA have really diverse student bodies?

Loyola Marymount is beautiful. I've been a lot, but only during the summer, so I don't know much about what the students are like. But the ones around when I was there seemed pretty happy, and I definitely was.
