Universities offering food science major

What are some of the top-ranking universities that offer food science major? Or can I major in chemistry for undergrad and then go on to stury food science in depth?

Food science isn’t a major. Major in Chemistry, you can probably get a food science job with a Bachelors.

Penn State has an EXCELLENT food science program.

“Food Science graduates enjoy high starting salaries and a nearly 100-percent job-placement rate.”

If I were you, I would strongly consider Penn State. You are virtually guaranteed a good job after graduation. Don’t forget, Penn State was rated the #1 party school in America, so you’ll have a lot of fun as well (‘_’)

Haha I toured Penn State this past weekend and they had an awesome creamery right inside their Food Science building.

UC Davis has a pretty well-funded [Food Science program](http://daviswiki.org/Food_Science_%26_Technology) to go along with its excellent agricultural history (including the country’s top Viticulture and Enology program). I’m not sure about rankings and such, but the school has completed a big chunk of its dedicated [Wine and Food Science center](http://daviswiki.org/Robert_Mondavi_Institute_for_Wine_and_Food_Science) which is a VERY nice building, and the few professors that I’ve interacted with in the department seem to be pretty decent. I’m taking a class from the department this Fall, I’ll pass on some impressions then. :)

I’m not up on the specifics of the program (I’m in the above-mentioned V&E) but there are several concentrations within the degree including a couple different biology or biochem focuses and a Brewing Science option that allows you to spend lots of time in the brand new brewery (opening in Fall 2010 and paid for by Anheuser-Busch, but we won’t hold that against them).

(I don’t mean to hijack threads, but… there’s a new subforum dedicated to questions about science majors. In a good-faith effort to keep that subforum alive and well, I would suggest that future science questions be posted there. Thanks!)
