According to the NY times a number of colleges (such as LSU, CU Boulder, and TCU), are working with sportsbook companies that want to introduce students to online gambling. I wonder how parents here feel about paying for their kids to attend such colleges?
I couldn’t find any other mentions of the article here. Hopefully people will be access this link:
I think all schools should tie up with gambling companies with a condition that no student ever have to pay a penny to pursue their education. That way, we can’t stop deteriorating situation anyway, but at least some kids/families benefit.
Student community should also object to any such deals that goes against the very spirit of education.
The entire college-business is moving away from preserving sanctity of education to turning students to making making machines. I am deeply worried about the so-called holistic process of various top universities as they somehow produced people like FTX’s SBF who didn’t hesitate to loot common people money to satisfy his ego.
I think the worst aspect of this is probably that some colleges are getting kickbacks. That is to say, they are being paid when a student downloads their app and places a bet using a special promo code. Perhaps we will soon see the high rollers getting a GPA boost for their usage.
Seems like a pretty questionable idea (at best). Especially considering some of the schools you mentioned are pretty high level athletic universities. I agree with despo-dad that if they want to foot the bill for the students education it might be okay.
