University Grant

How does the University Grant work? My EFC is about 175, and I will also be going to USC in a couple days to interview for the Trustee Scholarship. Say I am able to get the Trustee (dear goodness i hope so) there would be around $15,000 I would still need to be covered through other grants/scholarships.

With my low EFC, what would be an estimate of the amount I would receive from the University Grant?

no love guys?

Jets,
This is a huge weekend at SC. The Marshall School is holding an important event. Students are preparing to host possible Trustee Scholars and even the athletic department is busy with recruits.
There are some parents here who have had experiences with the financial aid process and may be able to assist you. In the meantime check out the financial aid forum on CC and look through past posts here which have addressed aid questions from other seniors.
Good luck with your interview.

There is an award called a University Scholarship, which may be different from what you're thinking of - i.e. a generic "grant." With a low EFC, you can expect your financial aid package to include scholarship $, need-based grant $, and an offer of student and parent loans.

The University Scholarship is a merit award that starts out at $4k per year, IIRC, but if you win another of the big scholarships, it goes down to $2500 per year. That's what happened to my S when the Presidential was added to his account.

Good luck at Explore, and have fun!

NYJETS, are you a NMSF? If you are, and you list USC as you first choice by the mid May deadline, you will get $4k in additional $$ over 4 years. USC is also noted for it's very generous financial aid, so I highly doubt you will have much of a gap, if any. Good luck with the Trustees interview. Be ready to be ready to talk in depth about your essays, and your EC's or areas of special interest.

The hesitation in guessing an amount for you comes from the fact that USC also uses the CSS/Profile to determine your need. Your Federal aid (Pell Grant, Work/study, Stafford and Perkins loans) will be established by your FAFSA EFC. Your University Grant will be determined by your USC-determined need.

Check on the Financial Aid forum for the amount to expect in Pell Grants with an EFC of $175. You will likely be offered subsidised loans (Stafford and/or Perkins) of about $3,500 and work/study of about $2,500-$3,000. (If you are awarded the Trustee, the extra University Scholarship that seems to come with it MIGHT replace your work/study award.)

You and your parents are expected to pay the USC-determined EFC - though how much exactly it is for USC has yet to be determined - and if needed, Parent Plus loans are offered to help with the EFC.

The rest of the package typically consist of grants, including University grants and - if you are in CA - Cal Grants.

Relax and enjoy Explore! You have been accepted at a University that provides EXCELLENT financial aid. Really.
