I asked to be released from my housing contract for financial reasons initially, which was rejected. I then got my doctor to write a note of my severe migraines and IBS, and they rejected it again, saying to either swap rooms (which I can’t afford), go use the community bathroom, and that loud noises are a part of any residence hall. Can I do anything now? I’m so hopeless and feel like I may have to withdraw.
Where are you planning to live if you don’t live in the dorm? If it is at home, you’ll have a much better argument than if you are planning on living in an apartment with 3 friends.
@twoinanddone I was planning on finding a single place off campus.
I have not read this fully but medical /psychological is on there. It is stated there are a few specific reasons you can be released. See if it makes sense to you.
Something else to consider… There are housing boards up at Michigan online and many people are looking to switch rooms etc. Maybe this is the better option?
Here is the link for termination :

@Knowsstuff I wouldn’t be able to afford the alternatives unfortunately Leaving the lease is really the only thing thaat would make sense health-wise at this point
If you can’t afford the housing, the college may be unaffordable for your family. You may want to consider withdrawing completely and going to one of the colleges closer to home. Are any of them within your budget? Transfers don’t usually get a lot of aid, so if your family can’t afford UM this year I don’t think next year will be any better.
Off campus housing might be a little cheaper, but not much if you are planning to live alone (phone, internet, cable, utilities, transportation to campus). It sounds like finances are the issue. Time to be realistic about what you can afford.
Back on August 23rd you were asking about attending Lake Forest for CS. I suspect Michigan has a reasonable suspicion that your illnesses aren’t the real motivation behind your desire to rescind a binding contract.
In an earlier post you seemed very conflicted about whether transferring to UM made eventual financial sense. Regrettably I don’t think it fair you portray UM as being unreasonable when the facts suggest your own decisions are what painted you into a corner.
You reference breaking the lease as the only thing that makes sense “health wise”. Are you suggesting your IBS symptoms flaired up so dramatically over the last 4 days that neither UM or Lake Forest are viable options?
From the housing website:
If you don’t want to go there and are considering LF or other schools, then withdraw. You would lose a deposit.
I am not sure I understand your first post - are you trying to use both medical and financial reasons? Can you provide the exact details on the case(s) you made? Depending on your situation, it might be worthwhile to reach out to RHA (Michigan Residence Halls Association), but results can vary with them (some RHA administrations seem to be very willing to challenge Housing on behalf of residents, others not so much).
If you can get out of the contract, then housing off-campus isn’t too cheap if you plan to live by yourself. Rent will generally be around 900+ depending on how far you’re willing to live from the school (in Ann Arbor). I know Ypsilanti is cheaper. Personally, even with health/financial issues, I’d apply for new apartments next fall so that you can have a better living situation, but then you’d need to live quite miserably this year.
