So I got accepted into the University of Florida and I really need to cancel my Housing Contract. However, I knew that I needed to cancel it after May 1st so I had to make an appeal. The problem is, they denied my appeal and said that I could re-appeal my contract one more time. I'm not sure if they will accept it though.

Here are the main questions:

If I cannot get out of my contract, do I have to move in and actually live in my dorm room?
If I don't have to live there, can I just pay the rent for the dorm while I live somewhere else?

Presumably, you wouldn’t HAVE to live there, but you still have to pay. There’s no way that they can make sure that you’re actually there.

But what a waste of money. Seriously, a huge waste. There is a reason they make freshmen live on campus. You’re proven to do better both socially and academically. The only legitimate reasons for not wanting to live on campus would be money issues (which is a moot point here if you’re going to be paying for two places) or a health issue (which likely wouldn’t have been denied if it was legitimate).

It’s more like a major family issue…
And no. Money isn’t an issue here. I was able to receive Bright Futures and Florida Pre-Paid. But I really need to see if I can just not move in.

If it’s really that serious of a family issue that it prevents you from living on campus (and again, isn’t a money issue), then perhaps it might be in your best interest to delay enrollment for a year. If it’s that serious of a family issue, it could seriously detract from your studies and social life.

Not trying to be mean or anything, just throwing something out there.

Ah, I can’t do something like that and delay for a year. That would actually make things worse and plus that’s kind of against my morals. (To put it in a strange way.)

Were you able to cancel your contract? And do you have any tips??
