We visited in late summer. We are only a few hours away and needed this to be a fairly quick trip, so we didn’t do any exploring around town.
-Every dorm on campus is basically the same layout, and it’s a good one with a living room and kitchenette with 2 bedrooms and a bath on each side. This seems like it would be easy to live in, and has the advantages of communal living (students aren’t isolated) with privacy (everybody has their own small bedroom so that they can sleep and study on their own schedule).
-When we talked with the person running the engineering information session, we asked for suggestions for a kid who would come in with the first year of an engineering program mostly done. They suggested that, rather than graduate quickly, kid could choose to take a lower courseload and intern at one of the many nearby companies during the school year. The idea of getting to do real work during the year really made an impression, and at the next school that we visited one of the things that the senior asked about was how much real experience they could get, with this being the comparison.
-We were there on a freshman orientation long weekend, so this may not be typical, but people were really friendly. The facilities that we saw seemed new or well maintained. The food in the dining hall was reasonably good.
