University Of Alabama College Life

Hi I’m a 17 year old African-American who lives in Michigan but also has a home in Georgia. I have a 3.2 GPA a 24 ACT and 1040 SAT. I feel like I could get into Alabama but my biggest concern is racism. My mom grew up in Mississippi and has always told me how racist The University Of Alabama historically is. But at this point in my life I need more safety schools and Tuscaloosa is only 2 hours away from Atlanta and we can afford it. Is racism truly a problem at the school? Can you guys just give advice and what’s life like on campus? Thank you!

The University of Alabama has the highest percentage of African American students among state flagship universities. What your mother says about UA was 50 years ago during the Civil Rights era and Jim Crow south. There is racism everywhere. I bet you’ll find the same level or even more up north in Michigan, and at Georgia, compared to UA.
