Hello!

2 weeks ago I was admitted to UA as an out of state applicant. I am thrilled to have been accepted but, as with many people, money is a large factor.

While I am already eligible for the Capstone scholarship (3.5 GPA min, 1210-1240 SAT) for $14k over 4 years, I am taking the SAT once more to hopefully raise myself from a 1240 to a 1290 (which receives a half-tuition scholarship).

Back to my question: I was given Florida PrePaid as a baby and now would like to see what I can get for Alabama. I've tried googling this issue with no luck.

I hear around that Alabama accepts FL Prepaid, but I'm not sure if that means that they will take the cash-out per-credit-hour amount, or if they will accept it as a full tuition paid.

Can someone tell me what they think?

Thank you!

No, Bama does not take Florida prepaid as “full tuition paid.” It really can’t. It would not be given enough money. The Florida Prepaid would only pay Bama a much smaller “per credit” payment.

you need to look at the details of your prepaid to see what it pays “per credit” when you don’t attend a Florida public.

*Does The University of Alabama have any type of program that matches the HOPE Scholarship (for Georgia) or the Bright Futures Scholarship (for Florida)?

The University of Alabama does not offer a scholarship that is comparable to the Hope or Bright Futures scholarships. You can find a list of our undergraduate scholarship offers here.

Florida Prepaid Plan:
The beneficiary may use their Florida Prepaid College Plan benefits at any private or out-of-state college or technical school that is an eligible educational institution by simply completing a transfer form. The Board will transfer an amount that is equal to the average rates payable to Florida state universities and colleges in Florida under your beneficiary’s plan.*

So…what is the dollar rate per credit that the prepaid pays for Florida state universities?

Be sure to keep to the 120 credit limit. That’s what it will pay for.

http://www.fgcu.edu/Cashiers/fpcp.html

I don’t know if I’m reading this right, but it looks like it pays about $120 per credit? (that seems low, but I may be confused).

The rate paid out by the Florida Prepaid program is a bit complicated, since it’s based on the type of plan purchased (and when you purchased the plan). The type of plan (and when you purchased it) will determine the rate paid out by the plan.

To use it at an OOS school, you will need to use the following form.

http://www.itppv.com/documents/pdf/prepaid/prepaid-transfer-form.pdf

Note that the OOS school (UA in this case) will determine how it wants to invoice the plan.

"If invoiced for the tuition and fees by dollar amount only, the Florida Prepaid College Plan will pay a dollar amount up to the average rate payable for 15 credit hours at Florida’s public colleges or universities under the beneficiary’s plan.

OR

If invoiced for the tuition and fees by credit hour and dollar amount, the Florida Prepaid College Plan will pay the total number of credit hours invoiced at the average rate payable for a credit hour at Florida’s public colleges or universities under the beneficiary’s plan."

My son is OOS, got several scholarships and had the Fla prepaid. They will pay the average per hour X 120 hours (or how ever many hours you paid for). He got $102 per hour. He also had one year of dorm which was around $2600 per semester. They sent UA a check each semester until the money ran out. For example, first semester they sent approx. $10750 + $2600. It was applied to the balance after Presidential, Engineering and ALumni Scholarship were applied. The remainder was sent to us by check. Second semester was a much smaller tuition amount, probably around $6,000 and then the $2600 for the dorm. We just put the check in the bank and used it for other semesters. As the previous poster said, it really depends on what plan you purchase. Let me know if you have any other questions.

For example, first semester they sent approx. $10750 + $2600.

Why would they send $10,750 for ONE semester, if the rate was $102 per hour???

If a student took 15 credit hours, that should be $1,530.

Your numbers don’t sound right in regards to the FL prepaid payout for ONE semester…

The student here could be misled itno thinking he’d get $10,000+ from his FL prepaid for one semester, when it looks like he’d really only get about $1500.

Based on the plan, that first semester (and second) could include Tuition Differential(purchased separately, after Feb 2007), Local Fees (also purchased separately)…etc. The $102 is the base…most folks however purchased it with either of the two above options…or before 2007 (so it would automatically include the Tuition Differential). oh…and don’t forget that the “college” plan pays less than the “university” plan…It really is something of a mess…

It’s extremely variable.

I’m shocked by the $10,000 amount for one semester as well. For me, that’s my entire tuition for four years!

Gator88ne, When you say
are you referring to the 4 yr vs the 2+2 plan?
We bought the 2+2 and the local fees plan back in 1999. I think the 2+2 is still a university plan for the 2nd 2 years, isn’t it?
We are trying to estimate what our D will get if she decided to go OOS or to a private school.

Good Question! I think it works out to be about the same. The first “2” pays tuition (about $102 at a Florida CC), while the second “+2” pays it at a Florida University (which is also around $102).

If you stay in Florida, the second +2" would also pay for the “Tuition Differential” charge at the Florida Universities (which range from $35 to $49 per credit hour), however, I don’t know if that’s also paid to OOS schools. I would hope it does.

Your best bet is calling the Florida Prepaid College Board and asking, (800) 552-4723; M-F from 8am to 9pm. See if they can work out the “value” of your plan, using current tuition rates.

In reference to M2CK post #6, the plan does have an “unrestricted payment option”. The plan will pay the total dollar amount invoiced up to the total plan value. So in SignalMtn’s example, what UA invoiced him (after scholarships), which was $10,750+ one semester dorm rate, which was $2,600. The 2nd semester, it paid out the bulk of the plan, which was only around $6,000 (+ the 2nd semester dorm rate of $2,600).

My bad for not listing the unrestricted payment option as a choice in post #4!
