University of Alabama vs University of Arizona

I’m a senior in high school and have been admitted to both Universities with their respective honors colleges with pretty large academic scholarships in both. I’m interested in engineering (most likely mechanical or aerospace), I want to audition for the dance team, and I’m interested in Greek life. If you know anything about these subjects or can draw any comparisons between the two I would greatly appreciate your information!

What scholarships were you offered from each?

Did you specify eng’g as your major for Alabama? Did you get an add’l eng’g scholarship?

Have you visited Alabama?

Alabama has the gorgeous campus and gorgeous greek houses.

Can you tell us more?

What state are you from?

From Alabama I was awarded a presidential scholarship (full tuition) and the additional engineering scholarship ($2500 per year)

From Arizona I was awarded the Arizona Excellence scholarship (about $14,000 per year)

I am from New Mexico. I have visited both. I liked the layout of Arizona’s campus and their climate which is similar to mine. However, I really loved the whole “southern hospitality” feel of Alabama.

Arizona is trying to do the same thing that UA is doing. UA has more money to accomplish that and I believe their engineering program may be ranked higher. What part of the country do you want to stay in after college? If East Coast I’d choose UA. If not then choose Arizona.

“If East Coast I’d choose UA…”

I honestly do not believe it makes much of a difference unless you are looking for a job in Alabama.

Check both of their career websites and see for yourself who hires from each university.

the difference in cost will be significant.

U arizona’s OOS tuition is $29,000 per year. You only got a $14k award from UAz…and that award will NOT go up as UAz raises its OOS tuition each year.

Alabama is giving you free tuition plus 2500 per year. That award is about $28k per year (twice the amount of UAz)…PLUS…Alabama will INCREASE its merit award each time tuition goes up. So, your tuition will always be covered.

What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay each year? They’ll be paying a good bit for UArizona…about $30k per year. Alabama will be less than $15k per year.

the state of Alabama is home to Cummings Research Park…the 2nd largest research park in the nation…so many, many high tech companies are in the state to hire graduates. Because so many high tech companies are moving to Alabama (because it is business friendly), getting a well-paid high tech job is NOT a problem.
