University of California Davis or Penn State?

After graduation, it is assumed that you will return to your country for jobs. If you are not a citizen, it will be really tough to find a job in the US.

For many Engineering jobs, you need to have US citizenship status to apply for jobs, because of the required security clearances. Yes, lots of companies recruit from the Davis, but the first question they ask is about citizenship. Engineering companies receive large contracts from the federal government. Non-citizens often do not qualify for the clearances needed to work on Federal contracts.

@“aunt bea” thx for reply.

I have got offer letter from UC Irvine also for electrical engineering major. Any advice on preference between Davis and Irvine will be helpful… Making a decision is becoming tough now… Thx for help in advance.

@iamjack Sorry for bothering you :stuck_out_tongue: but if you had the choice, which would you choose: UCSB honors, University of Washington Honors, or UC Davis?

@jackisawesome TBH, i would choose none. Honors programs in general seem like a lot of busy work with few advantages. However if you want to choose one, I would assume U of W’s honors program has the best alumni simply because its the largest school.

As for which school to pick, it really depends on your major. UCSB/UW are decent for engineering. UW/UCD are decent for pre med/ non-physical science. All 3 of those schools are more or less on similar levels, so don’t lose too much sleep on deciding! Just visit the campuses and see which you like. If you’re indifferent, pick a name out of a hat. I think that people will just naturally adjust to whatever school they go to.

Yah I am basically doing a bridge between neuroscience and psychology (behavioral neuroscience). So Davis and UW would probably be better for my major…but for some reason, while I click at all the campuses, I am really drawn towards UCSB @iamjack

@jackisawesome What do you want to do after college? Or are you not sure?

Also, why are you drawn to UCSB? Is it the party life?

@iamjack . It seems you are not very happy about engineering at Davis. Is it possible for you to share any concern if you have as I have offer for engineering major for Davis for Fall 2016… thx

@newaspirant98 oh no. Davis is a decent school, but I do think they for engineering ucsb and u of w are more established. Davis is known more for the life sciences and agriculture. TBH engineering is a an employable skill so any accredited school will find you a job. If you liked Davis when you visited it, I’m sure you’ll be happy!

@iamjack, Thx for info. Though i could not visit Davis being an international student, I do have offer from Univ of Washington for engineering but I do not have very positive feedback about it and also weather is not so great…

Keep in mind that because you’re an international student it is very possible that if you don’t get a master’s degree, then chances that you’ll return to your home country for employment is high. In that case you would want to go to a bigger school so companies in your country have heard of it.

@iamjack @PhantomVirgo Can you guys tell me interms of prestige how good is UC davis compared to purdue?

@Donthatejust Nationally and internationally Purdue is probably more well known. Especially for engineering and business, Purdue is recognized as a a top school. For premed or life sciences uc Davis might be a better bet. If you are instate for either school, I recommend choosing the instate school because the 2 schools aren’t more or less similar overall on prestige level.
