i go to a prestigous prep school in california and worked like crazy my 9th grade year to get into ap classes. the next year i moved 60 miles from the school and it screwed with my grades and it shows. i convinced my parents to moved closer to the school for my junior year and got my grades back up. i also work almost every night of the week and play varsity football and track at the same time. i also have more than 100 hours of community service. chicago has been sending me mail for a year now. i nervous now becuse even though i have the hardest classes offered at my school and show an upward trend from 10th grade my gpa is still only a 2.9. my sat is 1700 and my act is a 25. i took the aps and got got 3s and 4s on all of them. (for euro i was 1 of 7 black students in california to get a 4) im pretty sure my essays were very unique but will that be enough? have i screwed myself over?

What school do you go to?

Im not sure about your chances. Just make sure you write good essays.

fairmont prep academy in anaheim

unfortunately i think your chances are very slim to none.with a 2.9 gpa not even affirmative action can help you amongst a pool of many other qualified minorities. the sat is also extremely low and if you want any type of remote shot your gonna have to bring that sat up at least 200 points. the fact that you've been getting mail from chicago is just an effort to increase its recruiting in underrepresented sectors.

just my take on it.

If you're essays are like AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then it's possible.

Probably not. A 2.9 GPA is pretty awful...

A solid essay will definitely be the only hook you got. I don't really see any special interests though...

If UChicago is your dream school, I'd honestly suggest enrolling in some sort of intense summer camp or perhaps 1 year of community college to boost your GPA - then retake the SATs.

I don't know...I'm not an expert or anything.

slim chance in my opinion, beefs is right, there are probably over-qualified Hispanics or blacks that you are competing with.

however why dont you try for a track/football scholarship?

so if im screwed for uchicago what other schools should i be considering?would occidental, claremont or american be reaches?

im not sure about occidental or anerican, but claremont will be one hell of a reach, they are more competitive then UChicago, but then again I dont know what is them and their take on the whole affirmative action thing, but good luck.

I dont think that it is possible..., i am a URM and I attend Chicago now (looking to transfer to HYS)...and from the URMs i have spoken with most of them either have equal or better stats then myself. My high school stats are below from a chance thread i made...just to give you an idea. Not trying to sound like a jerk...but i think your stats would even be a reach for your state school... good luck man

Idk...what his family income is but he goes to a private school and he has done 100 hrs of community service (hard to do if your poor and working)...so im going to assume he is atleast middle class

my family is middle class 40grand range and we are on finacial aid at our school considering it is 20 grand a year

state schools, especially the smaller/middle ones would definitely accept him

You can definitly depend on your fellow CCers to be honest :)

You should try for the UC's. Are you eligible for the UC's?

What other schools are you applying to

im applying to hopkins pitzer goerge washington george mason and usd

uChic probably won't happen...try schools that are more in your range, such as the UC's, like Kidchicago suggested.
