Strengths: Essays, legacy (although I like to think the acceptance was my own doing), regional counselor told me I was a great fit for the school and that he hoped I ended up there
Weaknesses: I didn’t cure a disease or set up a charity organization for underprivileged children or anything. I was very active in a number of clubs, and as a result gained leadership positions, but I only pursued things in which I had interest, not just things that would pad my résumé.

School Type: competitive charter school - within top 10 in the nation
Ethnicity: asian
Gender: female
Income Bracket: didn’t apply for finaid so…
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
Strengths: maybe the class I created, since it showed initiative?
Weaknesses: being asian haha
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have no idea - but maybe they saw that I’d be a good fit. I’m pretty quirky and the essays were easy for me to write, which I don’t think a lot of people can say haha
Where else you are applying or have already applied: MIT (deferred), Wharton (rejected); also applied/applying to Stanford, Berkeley, USC, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, Duke
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: don’t overthink your essays. i slaved over my Wharton ones, only to get rejected; on the other hand, I did my Chicago ones in one day and submitted with minimal revision. the time you spend on your essays doesn’t correspond to quality imo. write them, get 2-3 people to read over them, revise, and as long as you’re happy with them, submit! and to those rejected - it’s the worst feeling, i know. after i got rejected from Wharton i doubted everything in the world - but then i got into chicago, and the guy that got into Wharton from my school got deferred from Chicago! so no matter what, don’t take a rejection too personally. good luck!

Essays: Questbridge essay about family story was very personal. Questbridge supplemental essay was about procrastination and showed creativity and an indie sort of vibe about me. I mentioned my college collage wall in my room in the essay, so I later submitted an art supplement of that. Common App essay was about my love of nature and one of the few calm moments of belonging I have; it was very serene, and showed my ability to write. I picked the untranslatable word prompt for the main UChicago essay and used it to talk about my love of English and how my math based family has always teased me. In my why UChicago essay, I described the university as an organism and said why I loved each part.
Teacher Recommendations: My Calc BC/ Calc 3 teacher’s recs are always strong, so probably a 9/10. My Economic/ Government teacher loves me, so probably a 10/10, even though she didn’t know me so well at the time. My Lang teacher is a good writer and had written me a rec for another program I got accepted to, so the letter is was probably an 8 or 9 out of 10. My Psych/ World History teacher had me for two years and is an advisor for a club I run, so it was probably strong, since he knows my personality. I got to submit so many recs because I applied through the Questbridge program, so between the two applications, I had 5 recommender spots, plus my counselor.
Counselor Rec: This rec was AMAZING. She let me read it, and she said I was the best student she had ever worked with. She bragged about my accomplishments and said that I was in her office all the time and had such a great personality. In a school where the counselors usually don’t know their students, that really meant a lot. That rec was an 11/10.
Additional Rec: None
Interview: Very short interview. The interviewer graduated 40 years ago, so we didn’t have much to talk about, but she said she always writes good letters about the people she interviews, but didn’t think that they even read what she writes.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes, and I ended up getting everything but my student contribution covered by UChicago grants through the Questbridge program I applied through.
Projected Concentration: Economics, English, Russian language, Medieval Studies
State (if domestic applicant): Nevada
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public, magnet, large
Ethnicity: zero generation Lithuanian immigrant 
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: ~$11,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Technically first generation college student since my mom’s degree didn’t transfer, raised by a single mother, dual citizenship with a country most people have never even heard of.

Reflection
Strengths: Definitely my essays and my general back story, my SAT test score was pretty strong and I had really high ACT English and reading sections
Weaknesses: My class rank was a little below top 5% and I had a 3.79 unweighted GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays and my personality
Where else you are applying or have already applied: had to withdraw all of my other applications since I was bound through Questbridge, so it doesn’t really matter

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
I am so lucky to have gotten matched to the University of Chicago with a full ride. Questbridge is a truly wonderful program for low income students, and I encourage anyone that’s now a junior to apply for next years for the National College Match (plus, you find out if you got in December 1st). I’m ecstatic and can’t wait to see all of you in the fall.

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): ~2500
ACT (breakdown): 35 + 12 essay
SAT II (place score in parentheses): 2x 800 + 1x 770
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 uw
AP (place score in parentheses): I actually got 4 for everything but Biology. So don’t lose hope if your AP scores aren’t up there!
Senior Year Course Load: Very rigorous, but just taking what I want to.

Subjective:
Essays: I LOVED UChicago’s essay prompts so so much. <3 I wrote about what’s my pH so I can tie in my love for biochem.
Teacher Recommendations: They’re ok.
Interview: Amazing  My interviewer graduated from my HS.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes. FA package is amazing.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

Reflection
Strengths: I worked so hard on my essays.
Weaknesses: This sounds bad, but I was pretty confident? I knew I had a good shot so I just went with what I have. Probably just the fact that I had to navigate this process completely alone with no help.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to MIT and Caltech EA as well. I’m probably applying to a couple more schools.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I don’t really think I’ll end up going to UChicago but it is a great option to have. Work hard on your essays, they really, really matter. It made a huge difference for one of my friends who was also accepted.

Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community Service: 500ish hours including a few big service trips

Summer Activities: a few big volunteer trips, wrote a holocaust novel, etc.

Essays: I had a lot of fun with these. Honestly I think chicago wants you to enjoy writing the essays. I was at the point that whether I got into chicago or not, I had so much fun writing these essays and applying that I owed a thank you to the school even if they had rejected me.

why uchicago
— pretty textbook essay, wrote about my bedside table filled with items that show my interests and goals in life and how uchicago fulfills those.

interests
— wrote a dialogue/short scene of a play-type thing with my favorite authors and philosophers talking to me all as characters in the scene, like socratic questioning style, you get the picture.

long essay
— I did the why odd numbers one and really liked my essay. I wrote a fictional story about boy named Eric. If you’re interested, message me. Nothing special, not like the next Clifford or anything, just a fun short story.

Teacher Recommendations: I read all of them. My bio2 teacher was also my Stuco advisor and she’s the coolest person ever. Her letter brought tears to my eyes it was so nice. My other letter was a history teacher who really liked me and is also affiliated with Stuco. Also really talked me up, really sweet lady and I think that came across in the letter.

Counselor Rec: honestly no idea. She’s new but very very good at her job. So it was probably very good. I know her really well and she’s really cool so she probably wrote me a nice letter

Additional Rec:
Interview:

 • super fun. No idea if it factored into my decision but she was a recent grad who was honestly one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. We drank coffee and chilled in a food court (and ambled around a bit) for three hours or so total just chatting. It was actually really fun and both of us were probably laughing more than talking. I may have asked more questions about the school than she asked me about me which is a good thing probably? If you ask questions make it something meaningful. I asked her about the schools feel, summarizing her experience as a student there in a sentence, etc. I mainly wanted to compare how she felt about her experience to people I knew who went to other colleges and see if that zeal was there.

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: essays and interview
Weaknesses: very run-o-the-mill applicant

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted because of essays and interview. My essays sort of put them on the spot, probably an edgy move but it was worth it I guess. Want more info on that message me.

Where else you are applying or have already applied:
Accepted- Villanova BC Case western
Defer - michigan (sorry but lol)

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:

GET OFF OF THIS SITE. ITS POISON. TAKE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON HERE AS A GRAIN OF SALT. DONT BE ONE OF THOSE SAT SCORE CRAZED STUDENTS THAT DOES EVERYTHING FOR COLLEGE! everything I did in high school was because I genuinely loved it. That kind of behavior pays off. SATs don’t matter. Just get close. Focus on the whole person.

Summer Activities: Columbia University Summer Program for high school students 2013; Yale Summer Session (earned 2 college credits and rec letters and all)
Essays: My PS was pretty good. Wrote about a cyber censorship experience and my reflection on rhetoric and reason, social change, regime types, cultural difference, epistemology and responsibility of media. I rushed my UChicago long supp in 5 hours and wrote a paper on the theory of love (self designed question). UChicago why was fine.
Teacher Recommendations: Didn’t read any of them, guess 9 regarding… quantity?
Teacher Rec #1: Didn’t read, but must be stella–history teacher knows me too well to write ordinary letters.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 1/8 North Korean blood…Is that a hook?

Reflection
Strengths: main essay, ECs, summer experience, love for the school, probably a full score TOEFL and SAT essay?
Weaknesses: no AP, from China (it’s NOTHING ABOUT ETHNICITY, but objectively speaking competition is just excessively intense here)
Why you think you were accepted: I really loved the school.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Columbia (admitted)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: UChicago is a great school, but regretfully I can’t go because I was admitted to my ED Columbia. I used to pull up all nights to reflect on the “soul” of UChi, and I saw it a perfect institution that I would be exhilarated to attend. As I recall the most exciting part of the application was writing my UChicago Supplement 5 hours before deadline–I was unsatisfied with previous drafts (4 of them) and started all over on that self design prompt. Then I wrote an essay on the theory of love. On Christmas along with the offer I received a handwritten letter from the office saying they really enjoyed my “love theory” and wish to see me on campus. That was a really complex feeling when I read that letter. Anyways, I hope everyone who eventually choose to attend will have a wonderful four years there!!

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: My essays were good and I was really happy with my test scores. My social work with NGO was really impactful.
Weaknesses: School grades could be better.Critical reading in SAT as well.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: i was rejected ED at Columbia .Few others-Stanford,Hopkins,Mich,Mudd etc.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Was really devastated after result(clearly with my screen name).Perhaps better school grades could be an edge but they are good.I was predicted very high as well so am a little confused. Didn’t get to see any of my recos though sadly. Am wondering if ANYONE got rejected-have not seen a reject yet only deferred.

I’m wondering the same thing @RejectMaster. I was deferred as well, but have not seen ANY rejections, which tells me the deferral doesn’t mean much.

I read a post somewhere that noted approximately 10% accept, 55% defer, and 35% reject.

And maybe it’s just that people who were rejected don’t feel like posting anything here, because they’d be the first red in a sea of green and yellow.

haha makes sense @crtexxx

yep! And according to my school’s naviance, we did have some rejects from this year’s EA, as well as in previous years.

Also note that the deferral acceptance rate is around 10%, so hope’s definitely not lost
