Essays: Questbridge essay about family story was very personal. Questbridge supplemental essay was about procrastination and showed creativity and an indie sort of vibe about me. I mentioned my college collage wall in my room in the essay, so I later submitted an art supplement of that. Common App essay was about my love of nature and one of the few calm moments of belonging I have; it was very serene, and showed my ability to write. I picked the untranslatable word prompt for the main UChicago essay and used it to talk about my love of English and how my math based family has always teased me. In my why UChicago essay, I described the university as an organism and said why I loved each part.
Teacher Recommendations: My Calc BC/ Calc 3 teacher’s recs are always strong, so probably a 9/10. My Economic/ Government teacher loves me, so probably a 10/10, even though she didn’t know me so well at the time. My Lang teacher is a good writer and had written me a rec for another program I got accepted to, so the letter is was probably an 8 or 9 out of 10. My Psych/ World History teacher had me for two years and is an advisor for a club I run, so it was probably strong, since he knows my personality. I got to submit so many recs because I applied through the Questbridge program, so between the two applications, I had 5 recommender spots, plus my counselor.
Counselor Rec: This rec was AMAZING. She let me read it, and she said I was the best student she had ever worked with. She bragged about my accomplishments and said that I was in her office all the time and had such a great personality. In a school where the counselors usually don’t know their students, that really meant a lot. That rec was an 11/10.
Additional Rec: None
Interview: Very short interview. The interviewer graduated 40 years ago, so we didn’t have much to talk about, but she said she always writes good letters about the people she interviews, but didn’t think that they even read what she writes.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes, and I ended up getting everything but my student contribution covered by UChicago grants through the Questbridge program I applied through.

State (if domestic applicant): Nevada
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public, magnet, large
Ethnicity: zero generation Lithuanian immigrant

Income Bracket: ~$11,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Technically first generation college student since my mom’s degree didn’t transfer, raised by a single mother, dual citizenship with a country most people have never even heard of.

Reflection
Strengths: Definitely my essays and my general back story, my SAT test score was pretty strong and I had really high ACT English and reading sections
Weaknesses: My class rank was a little below top 5% and I had a 3.79 unweighted GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays and my personality
Where else you are applying or have already applied: had to withdraw all of my other applications since I was bound through Questbridge, so it doesn’t really matter

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
I am so lucky to have gotten matched to the University of Chicago with a full ride. Questbridge is a truly wonderful program for low income students, and I encourage anyone that’s now a junior to apply for next years for the National College Match (plus, you find out if you got in December 1st). I’m ecstatic and can’t wait to see all of you in the fall.
