I've heard that extracurriculars aren't very big at the University of Chicago. I love journalism and creative writing. Is there are school newspaper? If so, how is it and how is the participation? What about a literary journal?

There are two school newspapers. One is the Chronicle (this is the administrationy newspaper) the independent student newspaper is the Maroon. It is very active....

There was a literary journal floating about, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Edit: maroon.uchicago.edu

Many literary journals floating about. Unfortunately, many don't keep up good websites, though I've found some.

Euphony (both U of C students and outside people-- note that website is outdated and the mag still runs)
http://euphony.uchicago.edu/

Sliced Bread, which started up this year and was a lot of fun to read, had everything-- stories, poems, art, random stuff

1000 Typewriters, undergraduate poetry

Gordian Knot, themed magazines with poetry and academic-type pieces

Midway Review, academic only

I'm sure there are a few more.

and a lot of students also write for Newcity, which is an outside magazine free on campus. http://www.newcitychicago.com/chicago/home.html
