Hi,
I am attending the UChicago Summer Session this summer and my parents and I are concerned about the safety there. Are the South Campus Residential Commons safe? I have read many posts about the South part of Chicago being dangerous. Also, has anyone attended this before? I would like to know how your experience was during the Session.

Just in case this is the misunderstanding: South Campus is called that because it is at the southern end of campus, not because it is in the southside, the whole campus is in the southside of Chicago. But, to qualify that, the campus and surrounding neighborhood (Hyde Park) are one of the safest neighborhoods in all of Chicago. There is a huge campus police presence. It’s in a city, so try not to do anything too careless, but generally the university is very safe.

The South Campus residence is safe. I believe that is where all of the summer students are housed as most dormitories are closed for the summer.

It is no more safe nor dangerous than being on Yale’s or Columbia’s campus over the summer…now, if the student and parents don’t like and/or feel uncomfortable around “city folks”…then, that’s another story…
