My daughter is a junior in HS and will be applying next year to USC, Univ of Miami Bruce Hornsby's school of contemporary music, Berklee and possibly Univ. of Colo. Denver. I feel we need some safer choices as the above three mentioned are so competitive. Does anybody know about Univ of Colorado?

I do know that it was recommended to my son and we were very interested. He decided to apply instead to Univ of Denver’s Lamont School of Music. They have a jazz/contemporary program as well. He was accepted (guitarist) and was very impressed with the faculty, esp. one of the jazz professors. I can’t speak for U Col. Denver except to say they came recommended by the same people as told us about Lamont. I would check out both if I were you. Both seem to be great and I can certainly say how impressed my son was with Denver. In the end, we couldn’t afford it, but he’s still keeping them in mind for graduate school or a transfer.
As far as Berklee, it is competitive, but my son was accepted there as well. He deferred for a year to try to get some outside scholarships, etc, but may go this year.
What does your daughter play? (or is she voice?)

Hsmusicmom, you might also look at the contemporary music programs at Belmont University, Purchase College, CalArts, U of Cincinnati, Cal State Northridge and Loyola New Orleans.
