Thank you! Yes if our daughter gets in and with decent OOS merit we will visit UConn again in April along with UMass and maybe one other.
Do you think they release decisions in the morning or evening?
Our experience was late in the day. 4-5:00, but can’t remember exactly.
My son got an email yesterday saying that UCONN Students get a free subscription to the New York Times and he got another email today from dormroom.com congratulating him on his coming college life at UCONN trying to sell him stuff for his dorm. Did anyone else get these emails?
No, nothing here.
I would say that is a great sign - we got nothing. Never got any of those type of emails from the 10 schools D27 did get into but I would say that can’t be a bad sign!
Nope.
No we didn’t get those emails.
It was about 12-2 last year
My kid who goes there never got any of those emails so take it with a grain of salt
HI everyone,
This page has been a fantastic source of information for me - THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INSIGHT!!!
Anyone else have nervous belly anticipating decisions (hopefully today or tomorrow)?
My student is very nonchalant about it. I think she is leaning toward UVM, but mom here is 100% pulling for UConn. It’s likely going to come down to the merit offer.
In your experience has UConn been generous with merit?
Stats:
oos (NJ), 4.87 wGPA, SATs not superb but not awful (1320), 1st gen, has had a pt job during school year and summer since sophomore year, at times has two pt jobs, NHS, strong ECs founding a club for mental health resources, articles written about her in local papers for founding the club.
I’m so nervous, I think she’ll be accepted to her desired program (MicroBiology, genomics) but she has concerns about the school and Dad and I have concerns about the money!
She’s concerned that there is “NOTHING” outside of campus (said with huff and eye roll as you can imagine a high school senior doing.) “Mom, literally, it’s just fields off campus and you’d have to drive to Hartford to even go grocery shopping!” I didn’t go on the tour last spring, Dad took her (I was home with sick sibling), so I haven’t actually been to campus to witness how “like, literally NOT. A. THING. outside of campus, mommmmm…”
I haven’t seen too much mentioned here about on/off campus life outside the classroom. What are your takes?
Again, I thank you all for your vast knowledge and your insight/input!
HOPEFULLY a HUSKY MOM
We are waiting too but unless they give D23 amazing OOS merit UConn is probably off the table. I know your daughter sounds dramatic (I get it) but she’s right - it is the most isolated campus we have ever visited. With not even a little town adjacent. It’s a gorgeous campus but it kind of feels like a fishbowl in that you feel like you can’t leave. Of course if you have a car and are familiar with the area it probably feels much more familiar and accessible. On D23’s tour her guide confirmed that transportation is tough . . .
We don’t know a whole lot about the UConn campus and area. We are also a west coast family, but we haven’t yet visited; S23 is interested in UConn because it has a couple of unique programs that would seem to fit his interests. Is it possible / feasible for a freshman to have a car on campus? How do students typically explore the surrounding area?
I don’t know the parking situation and whether freshman are allowed cars. That is one thing we would have to consider - is whether to drive cross country so she could have her car. We saw busses and I’m certain they must go on and off campus. Also I believe there are students that often go back and forth between the Storrs and Hartford campuses. But it didn’t seem super easy. I’m curious to see if someone more familiar with the school can weigh in.
It’s basically a huge beautiful self contained campus surrounded in ever direction by woods and fields for a while. Or at least it felt like it’s awhile. Campus spirit seemed good. The merchandising at the store was over the top lol! Students were more reserved as a whole then some other campuses we’ve seen.
hey, i’m a high school senior living in ct and uconn is one of my top choices right now. i’ve grown up going to campus my entire life for basketball games, hockey games, and more recently hanging out with friends who are current students. uconn is pretty isolated but to be completely honest with you, you don’t even really need to leave campus. there’s a small town right outside the campus with a big college town feel. there’s lots of little shops and food places right there. if she’s worried about transportation/getting places, ubers to this strip are only about $5-$10 so it’s super cheap and probably less than you’d spend on gas per week. the campus has so much stuff to do 24/7 and if she’s worried about not having anything to do, i would suggest rushing in the fall. it’s a great experience and it’s very lax, in contrast to the atmosphere around greek life in the south. if she wanted more information, she can feel free to follow me on insta, im looking for a potential roommate/friends. @caroline.levii
If I remember from our tour, no cars for freshman. At a certain amt of credits they can bring car - usually halfway through soph year I think.
so freshmen aren’t allowed to have cars on campus. you need to have a certain amount of credits to have a car on campus, and unless they accept your pre college credits, you can’t have a car. most students don’t have a car until junior/senior year. you don’t really need a car tbh, there’s a ton of dorm parties once you have your friend group and frats are usually throwing. once you’re older there’s a few bars near campus that people frequent but if you don’t have a car the uber is only like $6
Thanks so much for the info! (Yes, my daughter IS dramatic!)
Awesome to have the perspective of a “local”! Thank you so much! I should’ve mentioned too, that one of the BIG pulls toward UConn for my daughter is the D1 hockey team. We’re a HUGE hockey family & love our Fly Boys (Flyers) to death. She loves to go to hockey games and often makes the calls before the refs do! I’ll give her your info for ig. Thanks a bunch, Caroline!
This is awesome thanks so much!!
