University of Delaware vs. Villanova

I am admitted to both UD and Nova in Finance. Total loans after graduation are $22k for UD, $33k for Nova. I visited both schools and like them equally well. Is Nova worth the extra cost, particularly in terms of the strength of the business program?

@confu29 Obviously very general opinion without context…but as someone who hires and had friends / co-workers with Nova students…I would say it’s worth the investment…especially if you want to be in Philly.

Many of us on CC are in favor of reducing (or eliminating) any loans. The $11,000 per year extra that you would pay at Villanova= $44,000 over four years -with interest…will result in a very substantial amount. I’d definitely choose UD. Besides, they have a strong program/Innovation Center in collaboration with JP Morgan. I know someone who will be entering this fall particularly for that program. Good luck!

Sorry I wasn’t clear. The loan totals were for the 4 years, not each year. Debt each year: UD = $5500, Nova = $8300.

The extra debt, in this case, is worth it. Nova has a strong reputation and will land you jobs strong enough to make up the difference.

Both are good schools. If you liked them equally well, I’d save the money and choose U Del. If you truly preferred Villanova, I’d agree that it might be worth the extra money–but not just for the name.

You may want to take into account (if you haven’t already) how inflation might affect that $11,000 difference. Also, do you have someone to cosign, as you can’t borrow $8,300/year on your own?

UD is Stafford Loans only. Villanova is Stafford + Perkins. Nova also has WorkStudy of $3000/yr, which I didn’t count in the debt load.

Nova is worth it

Something to consider…additional cost of MBA if that is in your plans.

Yes, but at this point, I have no plans for grad school. The deciding factors for me are the quality of the finance programs at Lerner and VSB, and their career services.

Alfred lerner has their trading center and I don’t know if Villanova has any comparably hands-on experiences to offer.

Villanova has a trading center as well. Another twist here is the possibility of a double major or minor in Computer Science. Does anyone have an opinion of CS at UD and Nova?

Not sure if you’ve made your decision yet - if you have, congratulations! They are both great schools. I’m a senior at UD right now and I’m going to Villanova for grad school next year (both in accounting). I would say the programs are pretty similar. Delaware has a great MISY (management information systems - like applied computer science) option for a double major if you’re interested in technology. Top firms recruit from both schools. Villanova is technically #1 in business, I believe, if that matters to you. Good luck!

No decision yet. Hey, I got til 11:59. Actually, a big concern of mine is career services at UD. I know someone who got an MBA from UD a year ago and is still looking for a job. All my friends are going to UD, and UD costs $2800/yr less than Nova. But if Nova is that much better, I should probably go Nova.

Nova is certainly a better school than UDel, but it’s all about personal preference in this instance. Can’t put a wrong foot either way.

LBad> Do you mean it is actually better? What is “better” about it? The price tag is certainly higher…

The OP had to decide by 5/1.

@philbegas or @EyeVeee or others My DD is interested in applying to UD this fall into the Lerner College of Business as a finance major. We are OOS, but the fees for UD seem reasonable since I hear they are pretty decent when it comes to merit aid. Does anyone know what SAT and GPA UD is truly looking for for admission to Lerner? Also someone posted about minoring in CS at Villanova being a benefit, is it possible to minor in information systems at UD?
