University of Florida 2025 — Regular Decision

He’s in!

Any idea how many kids they take that receive their AA before graduating from HS? Also if they are not accepted as freshman how long the process takes to be considered as a transfer? Would love to know if anyone’s kids have been in this position?

For HS AA if your student is not admitted as a freshman then they will have the option to Opt-In for a Transfer Review. The student will pick from the available list of majors (nearly everything except a few for Health) and upload a copy of all of their college transcripts. The college will look for their prerequisite classes and then make a decision. How fast depends on the college/major. Some colleges are much faster at making decisions then others. Being admitted as a transfer means the student should graduate after 2 fall/spring semesters.

@VirginiaBelle So as of right now I am not aware of anyone who was rejected outright from the EA pool at Michigan. The first Ross acceptances were sent out tonight, so we shall see what happens. The EA pool that was not admitted was postponed and added to RD.

The only unbiased ranking list comes from the Wall Street Journal. The comprehensive list will be out shortly and even that one you take with a grain of salt. Poets and Quants is a self reporting list, you choose if you want to be on it, less reputable than USNews.

@coready What major are you asking about? If it is business than yes you are correct, unless you are majoring in accounting. The Fisher school of accounting is highly regarded and you will get a job after graduation. The premed programs are amazing. the school of education is great.

A lot of the pre req. classes are online. You watch the lecture online (preCovid) and them meet with your TA once a week. Many of the business school pre reqs are online, this is why I don’t think the business school is as good as many others. For example Kelley is probably a much better b-school, although overall UF is a better school than IU. Once you get into your higher level classes they are no longer on line. The accounting school is a separate school within Harrington, the classes are smaller, that is why it is the best business program at UF. IMO.

This is where rankings are silly. All the big firms recruit at all the major schools. Companies in Chicago will recruit at IU but not Florida. Companies in Miami, Jax, and maybe Atlanta will recruit at UF but not IU.

My nephew has an accounting degree from UNLV. He’s now self employed but he had a job with Caesars and many kids went to EY, KPMG, and D&T.

Find the right school for you.

Yes, the State University System has a cap, in aggregate, across all of the state schools. I have never seen how they allocate or manage that cap across the schools and how each school knows what they can bring in from out of state, however.

Exactly. It is also so much more about what you DO & EXPERIENCE while in school than where it appears on any ranking … which incidentally began years ago as a marketing tool & remains one today. Schools chase ranks (and their institutional goals) as much as applicants chase admission !

Thank you. Curious if anyones student has done this and gotten in through the College of Journalism and Communications? How long did they take for a response?

Yes how fast would depend on how quickly a college transcript can be reviewed and the prerequisites met

The following five courses are required for transfer students to be admitted:

  • ENC1102 – Argument and Persuasion
  • AMH2020 – American History since 1877
  • POS2041 – American Federal Government
  • STA2023 – Introduction to Statistics
  • ECO2013 – Principles of Macroeconomics
  • Attention Advertising & Public Relations Majors: PSY2012 General Psychology is accepted in lieu of POS2041

Thank you…she has completed all prerequisites  She hasn’t sent college transcripts yet.

@tsbna44 Your example about Rice is so relevant. I was advised to submit scores if they fell into the middle 50. My daughter even asked for advice from her local admissions rep for one particular school. At the bottom end of the middle 50 range for ACT, she was eligible for merit and knows people in who received OOS merit with that score in prior years. My daughter was admitted to that state school, however, her friends who went TO because their ACT’s were at a 25 received merit money, and my daughter did not. We agonized over whether or not to submit her scores. I guess we made the wrong decision since that other school was tied for top choice with UF. FSU was her second choice, but we’d hoped for an OOS waiver which she did not receive.

When she was submitting applications, my daughter refused to apply to any school she would not consider attending, and that was a total of 8 schools. We were blown away by how many kids applied to 20+ schools, and of course, people can only choose one school. From what I’ve heard, many universities will not redistribute merit that is reclaimed from students withdrawing. That leaves us in a position to go lower down on her list of colleges when choosing her next four years of education, or have her take out loans. Neither are great options. As difficult as this last year has been with life being canceled, this college application cycle has been the most stressful part of it all.

I hope for some good news for all of our kids who have been waiting for so long.

We are OOS and I was wondering, what is the academic difference between FSU & UF? From a Naviance perspective they seem almost identical.

Also, does anyone know if a student is going to be a recipient of OOS merit, would they find out at the time of admission decision?

You make a great point…not relevant to UF but for those reading of schools are TO next year. My D applied to Pitt with a 30. Their admissions rep said u absolutely should…we asked.

Their website says historically you need a 33 to earn merit which is why we asked.

We’ve gotten no merit. Had we gone TO would we have ? No idea. But we got none with a test.

So submitting may not hinder your admission but it may hinder aid.

To be painfully honest I wouldn’t expect any merit from UF. Kids that get merit at UF are basically Ivy material. In addition, they give out very little merit anyway. My daughter got 30k at UCF and $9600 at FSU and expects $0 from UF. 3.94UW and 4.6 recalculated and 1460 SAT. UF is much more competitive than FSU for admissions with GPA and test scores.

Pitt is aweful when it comes to Merit. You need to have top scores in order to be able to get Merit.

“We are OOS and I was wondering, what is the academic difference between FSU & UF? From a Naviance perspective they seem almost identical.”

UF is more difficult to get into along with that it is also a little more prestigious. Education-wise, it might come down to what you make out of it. There are some majors UF is better known for and there are some majors FSU might be better known for. FSU is a real bargain for OOS students and much better with their merit. This is not the case for UF. Do not expect any money from UF.

Many of these large schools have amazing opportunities if the students seek them out. Getting admitted and choosing a major is obviously the first step, but once the student is at the school, the whole admissions thing is behind them. It will then come down to internships and available opportunities. They have to seek them out. I have a junior at Ohio State and the opportunities have been endless. We have to see how my UF student does after in a few years.

@flprepaidmom what major did your D apply for?

@flprepaidmom I wasn’t expecting merit from UF, and even without it, UF is cheaper than her other top choice school, which is also OOS for us.

I have a theory (for that other school in particular) that may apply to other universities. Having gone through this process once before, it appears that 2/3 of the merit that is distributed goes to kids with super high scores or target students who have demonstrated no interest in the school. Some students with high scores will choose that school for financial reasons, which boosts the university overall stats, and the target students who have no interest will decline. The merit from all of the application withdrawals goes back into their “bank” and does not get redistributed and cannot be appealed, leaving kids like my daughter in a pickle. I’d love to find out the statistics on how many students offered merit money actually enrolled.

While knowing my daughter would not get money at UF, I respect that more than having a carrot dangled in front of her.

Interior design but will most likely change her mind at preview

Probably ranking and perception. FSU boasts surprisingly high test scores and I think has marched upwards in ranking trajectory. btw - just my opinion - but if you read about FSU and UF on Common App, UF comes off, as a school as more cold, less showing care and concern where FSU is in a list of schools such as Miami OH, U of SC and College of Charleston where they roll out the red carpet and show that they really want you to come.

Actually UCF has increased its scope - and you only read great things. I know USF has marched up the US News rankings but they don’t seem to have done the marketing piece as well as FSU or UCF - I’m just basing that on perception of what I take from these boards.

Truth is, all these schools are great and a lot of these kids will probably end up working together - some as bosses, etc. At my company, a UF kid works for someone from U of W Ga. Didn’t even know U of W Ga exists.

So pedigree wise UF is better and it does seem that FSU “rigs” their #s a bit by allowing students with lesser test scores in as summer admits…but I imagine impact wise for career or grad school, there’s likely not as much different in the long run as people would have you believe on these chat boards.

Both are reasonable financially even at full pay but FSU obviously more aggressive merit aid wise for the OOS. In state probably all have the state programs helping to defray costs at both schools.

My son got into 13 schools two years ago - engineering. UF and NCSU were the two that gave zero $$ so while I expect my daughter with a 4.5W, 3.95 UW, 9 AP and a DE with a 32 superscore to get in, I’m not expecting money at UF.

Ultimately she’ll visit both and wherever she feels a spark (if she does), that’s where she’ll attend. To base on a rank to me, where you have to spend four years, is a bit risky.
