There have been some changes at the portal now. The SAT score disappeared. I guess the admissions office is uploading decisions in the background.
Thanks - my son didn’t do the honors essays anywhere (except UGA after he was admitted in December) so we won’t be looking for that!
I’m hoping the same for my daughter! She’s gotten into honors at every other college she’s applied to, but UF is a totally different story.
The portal looks different. I’m assuming they are uploading decisions!!!
the calm before the storm…
Everyone should remember, your kids will spend four years here and root for hte school the rest of their lives. Rank is a great tool for consideration, but these kids need to pick the right fit.
And rankings change - UF has really come up. Other schools have come up and others go down.
If your child picks a bad fit, even if it’s high ranked, then it’s a fail.
Essays are critical. The Honors Program wants to ensure they are admitting students who understand the spirit of the program and who will take advantage of what the program has to offer. Accepted applicants all have high GPA’s and test scores. IIRC, the middle 50% of accepted students had GPA’s between 4.6-4.7, SAT’s between 1500-1550 and ACT’s between 34-35. The essays are used to separate students who all have stellar stats.
I thought the middle 50% was 4.4-4.6 and ACT 30-33, or are you referring to students accepted to the honors program ?
You are looking at admissions. The previous person was talking about Honors. I believe that’s the differential.
thx
EXACTLY what you said!
My son has those stats but didn’t write the essays. Didn’t know if there was an auto admit component.
Okay thank you!
Honors Program. 25% of students accepted to the program, we were told, had perfect SAT and ACT scores. Can any Ivies make that claim? It is an excellent program already and it is about to improve in orders of magnitude with the new campus planned for construction in 2022.
From the Honors page:
The University of Florida Honors Program seeks to promote the education of graduates with disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary competency by facilitating the development of the following characteristics within its student body.
i. Intellectual diversity—Students who are not only open to exploration of other disciplines, but who possess such intellectual curiosity and passion as to yearn for knowledge across the academic spectrum, increasing student versatility, and creativity
ii. Creativity and curiosity—Proper intellectual diversity is a catalyst for ingenuity, but is not complete without a creative and curious spirit. Students who possess imagination, artistry, and the inquisitive desire to discover the transcendental “more”
iii. Leaders and professionals—Well-spoken, engaging students with the organizational, strategic, and interpersonal skills to facilitate efficiency and inspire excellence in the global workplace
iv. Critical thinkers and lifelong learners—Constructive skeptics and masters of the critical reading and experimentation who possess the ability to self-teach and are infinitely eager to learn and grow
v. Service and Integrity—Socially-conscious students who are tolerant, respectful, honest, and compassionate, promoting cooperation and the upholding of ethical principles with open minds that are able to reevaluate previously held positions
vi. Intellectual confidence and disciplinary depth—Students with the drive, motivation, and resilience to thrive on constructive criticism and pursue mastery of their chosen discipline through research, undergraduate teaching, graduate coursework, etc.
Unfortunately there likely isn’t. There are many, many students with qualified stats who apply but many aren’t accepted. In my honest opinion, I wouldn’t expect stats factor into the decision as long as they meet a certain threshold
No Auto Admit.
You had to do as part of the common app when you sent it in. My daughter doesn’t have those stats but she did try at schools where it was auto admit or where you could send in later. But UF and UNC - those were at time of Common App.
So if you didn’t manually apply, you cannot get in.
Sorry - when i say manually apply - you had to check the box on the app - and submit the essays - as the same time as you applied for the college itself.
There is a section on the application specific for applying to the Honors Program. Last year my S was required to write two essays relating specifically to the Honors Program. You had to complete the essays to be considered for Freshman admittance. You can apply to the program after freshman year, but the Honors dorm is, imho, the best option on campus and access to early registration is gold. They also have their own classes with unique offerings my student has enjoyed taking advantage of.
Yes, at least some Ivies could admit a class of all perfect SAT or ACT scores and turn away people with such academic prowess. My understanding is you have to spike in academics AND something else to be a competitive Ivy+ candidate. That said, the Honors College at UF looks tremendous.
Just wondering. Does Florida let you know if you received any merit aid on today’s response?
Thanks!
On the FSU acceptance, they let you know right away if you were getting merit aid…
