Unfortunately, two new proposals (one in the house, one in the senate) are designed to bring in even more competitive out-of-state students to FL, by granting them in-state tuition for having a grandparent residing in FL. 'Grandparent Tuition Waiver' Moves In The Florida Legislature - CBS Miami

It is not an email, it was posted in FB and Twitter.
It’s talking about something in snail mail. I imagine the big envelope.

I disagree. Since so many Florida families are counting on Bright Futures, which is now in jeopardy, I think this is an excellent post. The majority of parents I’ve spoken with have no idea that a substantial overhaul is proposed for Bright Futures recipients.

Oh man, if that grandparent bill passes I hope they’ll allow it retroactively, I’ve got two who would qualify, with all 4 grandparents from FL, (and my husband and I are both UF alums.)

That would be great if the grandparents bill is passed. It would make UF a very attractive place for OOS students. We are from Massachusetts and UMass gives most high achievers a 16k a year scholarship if you’re OOS. From what I read there are only very limited gator scholarships given each year. My daughter now has to decide if an extra 15k a year at UF is worth it over UMass.

The same thing happened to my daughter. She had a 4.7 gpa, 1360 SAT, AICE diploma, AICE scholar, AP classes, 2 sports, captain, SGA and officer, Honor society. Ranked top 5% of class and a quadruple legacy. She did not get accepted. However, there are students at her school that had lower GPAs and SATs very few activities and they got iin There just seems to be no formula for admissions. She has worked her butt off to get into her dream school. It just makes no sense at all.

That sucks - your daughter seems like a fantastic candidate. I wish I could give her my spot.

I’m sure she has other amazing options!

So my D was accepted to Michigan yesterday. I didn’t expect that. It was a bit of a reach. So happy for her, not so much for me!

Does anyone have info about what companies recruit from UF? This salary for a Michigan grad is slightly higher than a Florida grad, but I am assuming it’s bc our cost of living is less.

Time to crunch some numbers. D and H (who is a Mich Law School Grad) say Mich is a better investment. As the proud Gator I am not so sure. :crocodile:

@Rkim ugh. You always hear about that outlier. My D may not go, very similar stats, I would drive up Monday and try to appeal in person. I know two people who did it last week and got in.
Talk to your principal, UF knows all the high schools in the state. See if he/she can reach out to admissions. Again I know our principal will write an appeal letter for our top students.

The best way to appeal is to have your principal reach out to admissions. They have the clout. I know of two confirmed appeals from our HS. Rejected - appealed and accepted to Pace.

You cannot 100% say any school is a better investment than another. Michigan is a perennial top 3 public school. UF has risen recently in US News but pedigree wise to most who don’t obsess with rankings like CC participants Michigan is far superior. If you are out of state it is also far pricier.

Higher rank and higher pedigree do not guarantee better success. There are Harvard failures and Florida Atlantic millionaires.

It’s an awesome accomplishment to get in at Michigan but as a parent what’s your tolerance for investment and a possible payoff.

Also what’s your child’s tolerance for cold weather ?

When it comes to money it’s a personal call. There are plenty of kids who turn down elite…ie top 20 private colleges for their regular state school having no clue nor concern what their state school is ranked. They chose to save the $$.

Congrats to your child. It’s fantastic to be accepted at Michigan. Unfortunately for a parent it causes that question they did not want to have to answer.

Oh gosh hands down Michigan. Congrats to your daughter for getting in. Its waayyyy Higher not only in ranking but quality education and future job prospects. Again of course depends on the student but for the opportunity, ranking being top 3 for decades and quality of programs well worth the investment. I would def go to Mich over the newcomer UF which i seriously question the ranking. Thinking the ranking is a lot to do with sports.

ranking has nothing to do with sports lmao. us news actually publishes the ranking formula of which sports is not a component. UF has been spending a serious amount of money reducing the student to faculty ratio and increasing research output. that being said, one of the main reasons why UF shot up in the rankings is because us news changed their methodology a few years ago and gave more emphasis on social mobility.

My d also got accepted to both schools. We live in Florida so with bright futures it just doesn’t make sense to let her go to Michigan. Both such good schools. Hard decisions in front of us!

@jubella we made a decision when she applied if she got into Mich she would go. She can always come back home. We have FPP

I would compare them by major. Not overall ranking. Engineering and business at Michigan are at the very top which may matter to employers. Michigan certainly has the more prominent national reputation. If your child wants to stay in Florida it won’t matter.

I also think there are successful examples from all schools and many can end up at the same place, but often the students at some schools have to hustle more to get there.

I know a girl who turned down MIT for UofF and she’s never been happier! So it’s really about what make you happy and debt-free as possible. Both Michigan and Florida are great schools. It’s about how dedicated you are a student and how ambitious you are as a person after school that affects your success level.
