Does anyone have insight into premed at UF? I’m deciding between Clemson & UF and want to know where I have a better chance of getting into Med school.
UF is the third best feeder to med schools
Perhaps this list is wrong…there are two. UF is on neither.
I’d assume Mcats etc are what matters. There’s probably little difference among two above average publics so go where you want.
I did a bit more research. UF has the third most applicants but that is not translating into yield.
So it means the UF students are less competitive in the admissions of medical schools, right? Not a surprise given the schools ranked high on the list though.
I would interpret as such. I would learn about medical admissions. Talk to an admissions officer. Or do further research. I’m no expert. So perhaps I’m reading incorrectly.
Btw I’m sure both UF and Clemson have pre-med advisers. Reach out and talk to each
So doesn’t it mean that UF is not in the top 30 for pure numbers attending medical school AND not in the top 30 for enrollment adjusted (per capita)? You see several smaller LACs enter the equation. And the placement schools generally represent a broad list of the top medical school in the country.
Does that mean that UF is not a good school for premed? No! Does it mean a UF grad won’t get in to Harvard Medical School? No! But it does appear it would be a harder achievement and is certainly not the norm.
Does it matter where you go to medical school? Yes and No. Depends what you want to practice. Don’t know for sure but I assume there are advantages of going to Tufts Medical and being exposed to profs / docs/ researchers that do work at Mass General. Maybe gets you started out in that world. But there are plenty of successful doctors that graduate from lesser known medical schools every year and do just fine.
The list is informative and would make me consider UG selection, but it wouldn’t be the driving force.
Plus they are deciding between UF and Clemson. So unless they want to skip school and try again next year it doesn’t matter. The research would have needed to be done up front.
But that’s why i suggested talking to their advisors. I’m sure both place medical school students.

I couldn’t find it but I’m sure you can get a zoom at Florida to learn more.
How do you deny an admission offer? Is there an option in the portal? I don’t see one.
I imagine you can ask for a year deferral. But I was simply saying if they want to reapply to other schools decline all offers abd start again next year
It seems a bit ridiculous tho. I’m sure all schools advise and place. Pick from Florida and Clemson
Personally I’m a fan of fit and finances. Not just which statistics lay out the best path.
It used to be that if you are a FL resident, than best to go to UF or state school, as Med and dental schools favor instate Us.
Thank you! I signed up for the meeting. @bookworm I’m in state for UF (through florida prepaid) and Clemson (I live in SC) so I get in state costs for either university.
Just a question to anyone who may know:
I saw yesterday on a FB page that a majority of freshman/sophomore classes are typically online (even before covid). Can anybody attest to the legitimacy of this?
… I do not want to go to a school if I’ll be stuck at online even after covid.
This is from a group of Parents and family of UF students
It seems that it is the Business Classes.
I asked about Engineering and most if not all of them said they took all their classes in person pre-covid.
Yes, I think that this topic has been misunderstood. It is really dependent on the major and specific classes.
i hope so. I’m looking into either being an engineering or construction management major. I want the majority of my classes to be in person.
I posted about this a week or so ago. You can go to the Schedule of Course on UF’s website and search the actual schedules to get an idea of what classes are online and in person, or hybrid. It actually goes back to 2019.
Here is an example of one Section of MAC2311, the first semester of the Calculus series for engineers and other sciences, for the current semester.
You can see that this particular section is “Traditional”, meets in person on M,W,F during Period 3 in CAR0100 (Carleton auditorium) and also has a small group meeting on Thursdays during Period 7 in Little Hall, room 0217.
There are probably about 50 different Sections for this course in the schedule, some Traditional, some Hybrid and some 100% online.
So, you can search through whatever class you are interested and see the methods of delivery available. My post a week ago showed an example of the first General Chemistry course in the sequence, CHM2045, and it is also in Traditional format.
So, spend some time going through this schedule to see the actual offerings.
My son (currently a junior) is a stats major, he had one online class freshman year - macroeconomics. He could choose to attend the live lectures though.
Any news as to when scholarships are being posted ?
