I’ve been accepted into University of Florida school of Criminology and I’ve also been accepted into Arizona State University, Barrett the Honors College at Downtown Phoenix for Criminal Justice. I would be an out of state student for both schools and financial aid would be a big factor in my decision. I believe that ASU would give me a larger financial package through merit scholarships but this isn’t the only factor in my decision. Most Importantly I want to know which school would be better for my major of criminology and criminal justice and which would put me in a better position to get a higher level law enforcement career. I know University of Florida academically is known to be a lot stronger than ASU but I’m wondering how big of a difference attending the honors college at ASU would make and whether UF would still be better academically as well as reputation wise from future employers.
Lastly, a factor that I am also taking into account is the enjoyment of attending each school. ASU Downtown Pheonix only has roughly 540 members as of last year so socially I am slightly concerned when comparing it to the exciting social scene of UF. The locations of each school are also factors in how enjoyable I might consider them to be with the comparison of the massive Phoenix vs small city Gainesville.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or advice on which school I should choose based on the factors of academic strength and prestige for my major and enjoyment based on social life and location. Thank you very much for your time!
Criminology is considered a solid major, criminal justice is considered more vocational. Criminal Justice leadsto work in law enforcement (police officer, DOC officer…) whereas criminology is more versatile. IN addition, UF’s school is very well-known.
The honors college at ASU makes a lot of difference, since its classes really are excellent, as are the facilities, but for your major I believe UF is the way to go.
Note: you didn’t get into UF’s Honors College? Email the Dean of the honors college with your stats, explain you’re leaning toward UF but have been admitted to the Honors college at other reputable flagships, UF is the one you haven’t heard from wrt to the Honors College, so you’re emailing to check it hasn’t been processed yet or if it means you’ve been denied.
Thanks so much for your help. I think I’m going to follow your advice and attend UF. Additionally, I will email the dean of the honors college and say what you have instructed and even if I don’t get into the honors college I’ll stick with the school.
Two ways to get into UF’s honor’s program, by invitation or Petition. However, for both, the application was due March 1st. Applications are now closed.
However, UF has a lateral admission process. Current students in their first semester at UF, who have missed the regular application or confirmation deadline or are not accepted during the regular admissions process can apply to the Honors Program through lateral admission.
